Lors du Festival d’Annecy 2021, Backlight nous a présenté son prochain projet VR : un jeu ambitieux qui vous invitera à fuir un raz-de-marée gigantesque à l’aide de titans situés sur une île.

Backlight, spécialiste des expériences VR en équipe

Avant de plonger dans ce nouveau projet, un bref rappel. En 2010, le studio Backlight s’est lancé dans le marché de la réalité augmentée et virtuelle. Rapidement, l’entité s’est spécialisée dans le « LBVR » (location-based VR), autrement dit les expériences à tester non pas chez soi, mais dans un lieu dédié.

On leur doit notamment Eclipse, une expérience pour 2 à 4 joueurs répartis en deux équipes (exploration et support) qui se lancent dans une mission spatiale entre film interactif et escape game, avec comme objectif la recherche de ce qui est advenu de la mission précédente.

Plus récemment, Backlight a lancé Oz Experience, une marque sous laquelle Backlight distribue des expériences VR, là encore en se focalisant sur le segment « location-based ».

Le projet Ascenders est donc à replacer dans le cadre de ce positionnement global de Backlight : un concept accrocheur à explorer avec des amis dans un centre dédié.

Ascenders : les titans vous attendent

Avec Ascenders, Backlight souhaitait apporter un twist sur le concept classique de l’escape game : pas de compte à rebours, c’est ici un tsunami en approche qui marche la limite de temps. Une approche plus cinématographique et très visuelle, donc.
La vague massive crée un but naturel et évident : pour l’éviter, il faudra grimper dans les hauteurs de l’aire de jeu.

Le vrombissement de l’immense vague qui vous suit vous fait ouvrir les yeux. Vous ne vous souvenez de rien : ni de qui vous êtes, ni pourquoi vous êtes ici. Vous rêviez d’être un oiseau et vous voilà enchaîné sur un navire, avec ceux qui semblent être vos compagnons esclaves. L’île sur laquelle la vague menace de vous faire échouer sera peut-être votre échappatoire et la réponse à vos questions.

Pour vous hisser au sommet de l’île, il vous faudra vous aider de la géographie des lieux, qui comportent des nacelles, mais aussi vous faire aider des titans, gigantesques, qui accepteront de vous prendre au creux de leur main pour vous déposer un peu plus loin.
Ces astuces de déplacement permettent à Backlight d’appliquer sa « marque de fabrique » : pas de téléportation, uniquement du « plane shifting ». Autrement dit, il vous faudra marcher physiquement dans la salle de l’expérience pour aller sur la main d’un titan ou grimper dans une nacelle.

Bien entendu, cette approche nécessite une expérience pensée de façon intelligente, la taille de la pièce n’étant pas infinie : en jouant avec les déplacements, les retournements, le positionnement des nacelles et mains de géants, Backlight parvient à contenir les joueurs et joueuses tout en leur donnant le sentiment d’un déplacement totalement libre, donc d’un espace dépassant les murs de la salle de jeu.
Des compromis sont parfois nécessaires : Jonathan Astruc, réalisateur du projet, nous a expliqué que le but initial était d’avoir des géants véritablement gigantesques, avec une taille avoisinant le kilomètre. Malheureusement, ce choix était inapplicable pour deux raisons :

  • la taille des titans a un impact sur la taille de l’île (s’ils sont énormes, l’île doit l’être aussi, sous peine de finir le jeu en quelques secondes) ;
  • la paume des mains des titans ne doit pas dépasser environ la moitié de la taille de l’air de jeu, afin que les mécaniques de déplacement fonctionnent.

Si la taille des géants a finalement été revue à la baisse, le grand spectacle restera de la partie, grâce notamment à du full body awareness : vous disposez d’un corps en VR, visible en baissant les yeux. Un détail certes délicat à gérer d’un point de vue technique (le corps doit avoir une posture cohérente) mais qui renforce fortement l’immersion en bordure de falaise. Parfait, donc, pour les reliefs escarpés de l’île et les phases en nacelle/main de géant.
Enfin, le projet exploitera aussi un sol vibrant, ce qui promet quelques sensations supplémentaires.

Backlight a profité de la conférence pour nous présenter un aperçu visuel du projet, encore en cours de création. Encore un peu de patience, et il sera possible de vivre cette expérience immersive par vous-même, dans une salle dédiée.
