Tatsuru Arai

Par : Marco Savo

The spectrum of audiovisual artists is as broad as the tools and different languages available.

Each artist explores a particular audiovisual area. The sum of all their artwork is what defines audiovisual culture.

Of course the definition is fluid and ever-changing due to the technological evolution and the constant offspring of new artistic languages.

Tatsuru Arai investigation embraces one of the most important aspect of the audiovisual culture: the synesthesia, the condition under which two or more senses are perceived simultaneously. In his specific case by visualizing the geometric structure that rigs the musical composition.

Tatsuru Arai - Audiovisual artist

One of the first artists to investigate the relations between music and imagery was Kandinski. He explored how different shapes and colours relate to each other by communicating different movements to the viewer. Same as different notes, rhythm and music patterns relate to our inner soul, triggering different emotional movements.

The Japanese artist (currently living in Berlin) features an interesting background of music composition, computer programming and multimedia art. Arai’s generative art is highly complex and goes beyond the audiovisual genre. It takes on a profound reflection around the universe and its structure based on vibrations, as advocated by the theoretical framework of the string theory.

His series “Principle of Hyper Serial Music” starts a direct dialogue with the Serialism movement developed by René Leibowitz and Pierre Boulez. The series adds “innovation” to the three main points of the serial music: “structural”, “complex” and “noisy”. Arai achieves this by incorporating AI within the musical composition and the visualization of its structure.

The result is an audiovisual duet between human and machine with the two elements constantly learning from each other in his ever-evolving investigation. Ultimately, Tatsuru uses the sound and its visualization as a key to make experience of the nature of the universe, even if just a small part of it.

She has performed live VJ sets, for example at Mira Festival, and has also been known to dabble in sound for her digital art pieces (see the ‘Visitor’ project below).

In her more recent work, she took her fantasy world to a physical space in the form of an installation at Galeria Melissa in New York City for her project ‘Paradise’. You can hear her talk about the whole project here.

Unsound: 4 – 11 October 2020 KRAKOW

Par : Marco Savo

Krakow, 4 – 11 October 2020

Unsound focuses on a broad swath of contemporary music — emerging, experimental, and left-field — whose sweep doesn’t follow typical genre constraints. Influential around the world, it has developed a reputation for identifying innovative scenes and radical sounds.

It’s a platform for an exchange of artistic ideas for musicians, visual artists, curators, journalists, record label owners and booking agents from every continent.

The theme for Unsound 2020 is Intermission. Meaning a break in a performance or production, here it also refers to the rupture caused by COVID-19, a period starkly separating before from after. The word therefore embodies multiple, and somehow contradictory, forces.

The audiovisual event takes place every year at a number of venues across Kraków, regular events also take place in New York, Adelaide, Toronto, and London. Between 2016 and 2018, Unsound also produced eleven festivals in Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Caucasus, part of a long history of working with curators and artists in the post-Soviet region.

As well as spotlighting emerging artists, Unsound also commissions new shows and encourages trans-border collaborations, adapts and re-imagines abandoned spaces for concerts and club nights, manages cutting-edge artists, and is known for its sound-inspired Ephemera perfume project.

Deadline: 3 May 2020

Residence: July – August 2020

The artist residence offered by Eufònic and Lo Pati Art Centre will take place at Delta de l’Ebre between July and August.

The call aims at experimental music and video, visual and sound arts projects related to the landscapes and soundscape of the natural area of Ebre river Delta, fostering dialogue and interaction between natural space and creativity.

This year the open call has a special focus in fragility: after the storm Gloria devastated much of the Iberian peninsula last January, the Ebre river Delta was one of the most affected areas. Highlighting the fragility of this natural area and the need for urgent actions.

This 2020 edition wants to emphasize these parameters from a creative point of view: a fragile system, constantly subjected to changes, erosion and subsidence, added to an irreversible phenomenon such as the sea level rise.

Eufònic Urbà – Festival of Sound, Visual & Digital Performing Arts

Eufònic is a sound, visual and digital-performing arts festival held in Sant Carles de la Ràpita about an hour South of Barcelona. As an extension of this annual festival, Eufònic Urbà, provides a city-based version of the festival, which sees exhibitions and installations at the Arts Santa Mònica, right in the very heart of Barcelona. Eufònic experiences can be found in, and not limited to; museum spaces, sound actions, activities for the family audience, and concerts in unique spaces.

This year, we will have the pleasure to explore the urban festival for an entire month – leaving us with no excuse for not absorbing some audiovisual culture this winter. From February 1 to 29, 2020, we can expect to enjoy artistic presentations, audiovisual performances and experimental proposals some of which have already been presented at the summer version of the festival on the mediterranean coast, as well as some new exclusive features, as well as presentation of the creative residences.

The festival is organised in two different phases.
The most punctual of the two being 7th–8th February with more one-off performances and timed events, such as AV performances and project presentations, with artists such as NSDOS, Sam Aaron, Balfa, Clara Brea, dvdv, William Luke Valerio, Jordi Salvadó and Tim Cowlishaw & Jakub Fiala.

“where the human presence is diluted in the responsibility of being cause or effect”

The longer duration part of the festival offerings involves Tonalitats afectives (Affective Tones in Catalan), an exhibition on the 2nd floor of Arts Santa Mònica, on Las Ramblas. It can be visited for a month (until February 29) and entrance is completely free. It focuses on the visions of six artists linked to the liquid gesture, the indeterminate process and involuntary creative will as tools of work and processes of reflection. Amongst the huge variety of installations, you will be able to find everything from changes in subject matter, algorithmic creations, and neobiological worlds, creating a discourse about a variety of scientific observations, such as memory of space and context, and objectivity and physicality.

Work includes projects by artists such as Navid Navab and Michael Montanaro, Kathy Hinde, Óscar de la Fuente, Sofia Crespo, Marc Vilanova and Raquel Meyers).
