Le nouveau Samsung Galaxy Note 10 ne sera pas compatible avec le casque Gear VR. Une décision qui semble marquer la fin de l’ère des casques VR pour smartphones type Cardboard…

Lancé en novembre 2015, le Samsung Gear VR fut l’un des premiers casques de réalité virtuelle grand public disponibles sur le marché. Cependant, avec l’essor des casques autonomes comme l’Oculus Quest, son avenir semble de plus en plus compromis.

Rappelons que la dernière version de l’appareil date de 2017. Depuis lors, le casque VR pour smartphone n’a pas été mis à jour par Samsung. Les Galaxy S10 lancés en février 2019 sont compatibles, mais uniquement par le biais d’un adaptateur. Il en va de même pour le Galaxy Note 9 de 2018. De plus, même si le casque a toujours une page sur la boutique en ligne de Samsung, il semblerait qu’il ne soit plus possible de l’y commander.

Lors de la présentation du Galaxy Note 10, le 7 août 2019, Samsung n’a pas mentionné le Gear VR une seule fois. Aujourd’hui, l’analyste Anshel Sag annonce avoir reçu la confirmation officielle que le Note 10 ne sera pas compatible avec le Gear VR. On ignore si un adaptateur permettra d’utiliser le casque, ou si Samsung a bel et bien décidé d’abandonner ce produit.

Dans les deux cas de figure, cette décision de Samsung semble marquer la fin de l’ère des casques VR pour smartphones. Face aux casques autonomes que l’Oculus Quest ou le HTC Vive Focus, ces appareils ne sont plus suffisamment confortables, pratiques ou performants. En mai 2019, Google annonçait d’ailleurs que son smartphone Pixel 3a ne serait pas compatible avec la plateforme Daydream VR. L’époque des casques VR mobiles type Cardboard paraît donc bel et bien révolue
