L’ADB qui n’en est pas un de l’Apple Scanner

En faisant une recherche sur du vieux matériel, je suis tombé sur la page Wikipedia de l’Apple Scanner, le premier scanner d’Apple. Elle indique qu’il se connecte en SCSI ou avec de l’ADB, ce qui m’a étonné.

L’ADB a servi essentiellement pour les claviers et les souris, et de temps en temps pour des accessoires différents (comme un modem) mais le débit très faible dans ce cas limite franchement. Pour un scanner, qui transmet forcément beaucoup de données, l’ADB semble peu adapté. Du coup, j’ai effectué quelques recherches. Premièrement, on trouve l’information sur Wikipedia (dans plusieurs langues), mais sans sources. La seule référence ne parle pas de l’interface. Ensuite, j’ai cherché la fiche technique, qui n’indique pas la présence de l’ADB, uniquement du SCSI.

Sur cette page, on trouve bien une prise mini DIN, avec une légende qui indique “ADB & SCSI port. Security connector“. Mais l’image ne montre pas un port ADB. Le nombre de broches (8) implique plutôt un connecteur série. Dans le monde Apple, la confusion est courante : l’ADB (4 broches), le série (8 broches), le Geoport (9 broches) et le LocalTalk (3 broches) utilisent la même forme de prise, le mini DIN.

Ce n’est pas de l’ADB

Sur le même site, on trouve le manuel technique de l’Apple Scanner, qui montre bien la présence de la prise mini DIN, mais avec un énigmatique “Not Used“. Je suppose qu’Apple avait prévu soit la possibilité de partager le scanner en LocalTalk, soit la possibilité de le relier en série sur les anciens Mac, mais que cette option a été abandonnée. Pour rappel, le bus SCSI (première génération) permet des débits de l’ordre de 40 Mb/s (bon, en pratique nettement moins sur un Mac de l’époque, mais ça donne un ordre de grandeur) et le bus série atteint dans le meilleur des cas 230 kb/s sans horloge externe (et souvent pas plus de 56 kb/s dans les vieux Mac).

La conclusion de tout ça ? Wikipedia peut se tromper et la vérification n’est pas une option, même s’il faut être franc : c’est globalement fiable. Et le premier scanner Apple n’a pas d’ADB. Par ailleurs, les suivants ne possèdent évidemment pas non plus d’ADB, mais n’ont pas non plus de connecteur série inutilisé.

AirPrint… et les scanners USB

Depuis quelques années maintenant, Apple pousse AirPrint pour remplacer les pilotes de scanners et d’imprimantes. Depuis l’année dernière, la firme a même annoncé qu’elle ne proposerait plus les pilotes sous macOS, pour pousser AirPrint.

Depuis les débuts de Mac OS X, Apple fournit en effet des pilotes pour pas mal de modèles, qui permettaient d’ailleurs de gagner quelques gigaoctets si vous n’aviez pas d’imprimante. A partir de Mojave, Apple ne fournit plus de nouveaux pilotes, donc si le fabricant de votre imprimante (ou de votre scanner) n’en propose pas… c’est mort. La solution AirPrint s’impose donc.

Assez récemment, j’ai découvert un truc en rapport avec ça : AirPrint fonctionne en USB. Oui, ça semble un peu illogique dit comme ça. La liste est assez courte : quelques imprimantes Canon et deux scanners de la marque. J’ai justement récupéré un modèle pour un test, le LiDE 300.

De fait, pas de pilotes à installer. Il suffit de brancher le scanner en USB, de lancer Transfert d’images (par exemple) et ça fonctionne. Le pilote de base ne propose pas beaucoup d’options (il y en a plus sur le pilote Canon du LiDE 220 que j’utilise habituellement) mais les fonctions nécessaires restent présentes : résolution, sélection, réglages manuels, etc.

Les outils basiques (en bas à droite)

Dixit Canon, ça fonctionne à partir de El Capitan, ce que j’ai pu vérifier sur une machine de test : il fonctionne directement de 10.11 à 10.15 (bêta 5). Sous 10.10, Transfert d’images voit le scanner mais ne permet pas la numérisation.

Si vous avez besoin d’un scanner et que vous n’êtes pas certain que le fabricant continuera à proposer des pilotes, c’est donc une solution intéressante même si elle est limitée : dans la liste d’Apple, on ne trouve que deux scanners compatibles, le LiDE 300 et le LiDE 400. On peut par contre espérer que les fabricants suivront Canon dans le futur.
