L’université du Sussex veut vous aider à toucher les hologrammes

Et si la réalité augmentée devenait physique et sortait du virtuel ? C’est que cherchent à faire les chercheurs de l’université du Sussex, pour un projet très (très) séduisant permettant de toucher les hologrammes.

C’est à l’école d’ingénierie et d’informatique de l’université du Sussex que se déroule ce projet pour le moins innovant en réalité augmentée. Ils ont imaginé la possibilité d’afficher des hologrammes tactiles, sans avoir recours à un casque de réalité augmentée.

Toucher les hologrammes : un projet encore pratique

Ce projet a donc été nommé le « Multimodal Acoustic Trap Display » (MATD), et nécessite le recours à un projecteur LED, un ensemble de haut-parleurs et une perle en mousse. Les enceintes génèrent des ondes ultrasoniques qui maintiennent la balle en l’air et la font bouger très rapidement pour donner l’illusion d’une image volumétrique. Le projecteur se charge de donner vie au contenu avec le recours à des lumières bleu, vert et rouge.

« Notre nouvelle technologie s’inspire d’anciens téléviseurs qui utilisent un balayage à faisceau de couleur unique le long de l’écran si rapidement que votre cerveau l’enregistre comme une seule image. Notre prototype fait de même en utilisant une particule colorée qui peut se déplacer si rapidement n’importe où dans l’espace 3D que l’œil nu voit une image volumétrique en l’air» expliquent les chercheurs. Avec une autre enceinte, on peut même créer un sentiment de feedback quand vous touchez l’objet, de quoi donner naissance à une illusion particulièrement réaliste, celle de toucher les hologrammes. Reste désormais à voir cette technologie être déployée dans le monde réel.
