CTM Festival

Berlin, January 24 – February 2 2020

CTM’s 21st edition launches with an announcement of new performances, special projects, and commissioned works.

Combining unique productions, concerts, and club nights with a dense daytime programme of talks, discussions, installations, and an exhibition, CTM 2020 proposes multiple entry points into thinking about this year’s Liminal theme.

Liminal phenomena and states are transitional phases in which a familiar order sees its values and symbols destabilised; norms are suspended or turned on their heads. We find ourselves in ambiguous spaces, somewhere between a past that is no longer valid and an ever-becoming future.

TM 2020 will again play out across some of Berlin’s most standout cultural and nightlife venues. For the first time, the festival hosts special projects at Radialsystem V and an immersive listening series at Silent Green’s Betonhalle, while continuing its close relationship with HAU Hebbel am Ufer, Berghain, Kunstquartier Bethanien, Festsaal Kreuzberg, and SchwuZ. A limited number of Early-bird Festival Passes are available now.

As always, CTM takes place parallel to and in collaboration with transmediale festival. The jointly organised Vorspiel 2020 Open Call is out now. Vorspiel will again bring together a wide range of Berlin-based artists, initiatives, and venues, hosting a city-wide programme of cultural events.

Resumen de la mesa redonda sobre ‘Visualist’ en Valladolid: Seminci Transmedia 2019

Después del estreno en Signal Festival de Praga, Visualist’ sigue de gira. Su estreno a nivel nacional fue en Seminci, la Semana Internacional de cine de Valladolid. La siguiente parada será el festival BIME PRO, que nos hizo un hueco en su programación de conferencias. Pedro Pantaléon dará una charla el miércoles 30 mientras muestra algunos fragmentos seleccionados del documental.

Volvamos a Seminci, llevamos ya tres años siendo mediapartner de una sección del festival que aborda temas relacionados con la visuales. Ya os contamos que incluyó en 2017 un ciclo de Live Cinema en su programación y generó también un espacio de debate para explorar el alcance de la práctica del Live Cinema, a demás de directos audiovisuales como el de Marta Verde & NegrøNegrø o Hector de la Puente. El año pasado ya empezó a hablarse de la «comunicación transmedia» y la «Realidad Virtual», con una mesa de debate en la que participó la visualista catalana Xarlene. También hubo directos audiovisuales como el de Los Voluble. Todo ello en el Teatro Zorrilla y  coordinado por bit:LAV.

Este año, apuestan por el formato fulldome y además de ser mediapartner, formamos parte de su programación, con la proyección de Visualist, Those who see beyond y una mesa redonda, en la que Oscar Testón y Pedro Pantaleón expresarían su visión sobre este nuevo arte que tantas etiquetas recibe: visuales, vjing, directos A/V, comunicación A/V, Live Cinema o el término más moderno «Creative coder», de esto y de muchos otros temas se habló en esta mesa redonda, que tuvo lugar de 18h a 21h, con la impulsora del Festival de Cine Ccvad, Virginia Diez, que moderó la mesa redonda sobre la creación transmedia.

Fue en la Sala Experimental del Teatro Zorrilla, con la presencia de uno de los directores del documental, Pedro Pantaleón; el productor del documental y creador de la revista digital Vjspain.Com, Oscar Testón-Otu; la responsable del laboratorio AvLab, Manuel Prados de Medialab-Prado, Alberto de Espacio Tangente y Virginia Díez como moderadora. Entre el público, Manu Cid (co-director del documental), Rubén G. Kielmannsegge (productor musical y responsable de la música de «Visualist», entre muchas otras cosas) y Marta Verde (artista visual que aparece en ‘Visualist’).

En este caso entrevistamos a Pedro Pantaléon y Manu Cid, para que nos cuenten cómo fue la experiencia y qué temas se abordaron en la mesa redonda. Empezamos por Pedro.

¿Cómo fue la aventura de viajar a Valladolid a estrenar el documental en territorio nacional?
Oscar, Rubén, Manu y yo salimos juntos de Madrid y llegamos a Valladolid. Quedamos con Teresa de bit:LAV, que nos llevó al Teatro Zorrilla para hacer las pruebas técnicas. Después no dieron las acreditaciones y un libro con toda la programación. Nos hizo mucha ilusión aparecer en ese libro.

¿Cómo reaccionó el público a la proyección del documental?
La sala estaba llena, la gente se reía en los momentos en los que se tenían que reír. El público respondió muy bien, tuvo muy buena acogida. Virginia, la moderadora de la mesa redonda nos presentó y se inició el debate.  A mi derecha tenía Alberto que era es responsable del Espacio Tangente de Burgos, a mi izquierda tenía a Oscar, y junto a Oscar los responsables de MediaLab pro. Expliqué qué fue lo que nos motivó a hacer el documental y mi trayectoria como Videojockey.

¿Qué temas salieron? ¿Qué preguntaba el público?
Se habló del origen del Videojockey, cómo surge, cómo han llegado a exponer en museos, todo giraba entorno al hilo argumental del documental. Un señor nos hizo una pregunta muy buena. ¿Qué tipo de formación habían recibido los artistas que salían en el documental para poder llegar a hacer esas obras? Le parecía curioso que todos hicieran cosas tan diferentes. Las respuestas hacían referencia a la tecnología y al auto-aprendizaje de cada artista y eso explica por qué cada uno elige un camino distinto. Se habló de la comunicación transmedia, me hace gracia porque cuando yo estudié en la universidad ya se hablaba de esta palabra aunque aún no existía, 15 años después ya es una realidad.

Queríamos saber más, así que también entrevistamos a Manu Cid, el co-director de ‘Visualist’ que en esta ocasión participó desde el público.

¿Qué temas destacarías de los que se hablaron en la mesa redonda? 
Se habló de la necesidad de hacer este documental para dar a conocer esta escena que está tan en la sombra. Se estuvo hablando del tema de las etiquetas, que en realidad no tienen mucho sentido pero sirven para identificar lo que hacen cada uno de estos artistas. Y ahí saqué el tema  de cómo podíamos llamar a este «nuevo arte» de una forma más global, porque quizá si le ponemos una única etiqueta, si lo englobamos bajo un mismo concepto, quizá ese concepto, terminaría impulsando la escena de algún modo. ¿Cómo podríamos englobar todo esto para que llegara a más gente? Ahí cada uno daba su opinión. Salió muchas veces el nombre de “Creative Coder”, que sería lo más avanzado o lo más puntero ahora mismo. Otro tema interesante que salió fue la influencia de todo este desarrollo tecnológico en la sociedad. Tendemos a asociar la tecnología y la inteligencia artificial a cosas no necesariamente buenas. Se habló de la posibilidad de ser esclavos de esa misma tecnología.

¿Y el papel de la mujer en un sector mayoritariamente masculino?
Se habló del papel de la mujer, ahí Marta Verde dio su opinión, dijo que es un sector en el que hay más hombres que mujeres, aunque también se defendió la idea de que cada vez hay más mujeres y se mencionó a Xarlene y a Alba G. Corral.

¿Qué otro tema destacarías?
Otra cosa interesante que salió es que, a diferencia de otras disciplinas artísticas, los visualistas tienen backgrounds muy diversos. Arquitectos, matemáticos, ingenieros, y esto es algo que lo hace más interesante, rico, esto es algo que lo desconoce mucha gente.

¿Se habló de la evolución de la figura del Vj?
Realmente el videjockey lleva existiendo mucho tiempo, pero los shows actuales le dan más protagonismo. Aunque hay que tener claro que las visuales no son estrictamente necesarias, que dependen de la intención del directo y del espacio en el que se está trabajando.

Otro tema que surgió es “si siempre el Vj está detrás del músico, es el que sigue la música y pone las visuales” ¿Existe la posibilidad de que sea al revés? Teniendo en cuenta que el Vj es una figura que ha crecido y ha evolucionado subordinada a la figura del DJ y eso es lo que probablemente ha hecho que esté siempre en segundo plano. Se habló de la posibilidad de invertir esa idea. Oscar Testón comentó que lo había intentado, que había hecho una sesión en la que él ponía las visuales y el músico tenía que seguirlo a él, pero que había sido muy complicado.

¿Y la definición de VJ fue un tema del debate?
Hubo algunas intervenciones sobre qué es un Vj. Pedro dijo que para él un VJ es un visualista que trabaja con su propio material, graba y edita sus propias visuales para usarlas en sus sets o instalaciones, no para que «alguien» se le descargue de internet y lo use en beneficio propio. Yo se lo rebatí porque en realidad mientras tu tengas un discurso, tu puedes coger material ya creado, es algo que se ha hecho siempre, tanto en Live Cinema como en Vjing. Para Matt Black es el rey del Sample y sus obras siempre se han basado en usar muestras de creaciones de otros artistas tanto de vídeo como de audio, aunque luego haya desarrollado las suyas a partir de ellas.

¿Hacia dónde va todo esto? ¿Cuál es el futuro?
Una de las preguntas que se lanzaron fue «hacia dónde va todo esto», ¿cuáles son los límites?. Y ahí nadie tenía una respuesta clara, igual que el propio documental. Yo hice una intervención explicando que en los últimos festivales que he ido, como el LEV Matadero de la semana pasada, en el que hubo un espacio dedicado a la Realidad Virtual, en Seminci Transmedia que este año ha tenido mucho contenido relacionado con Realidad Virtual y en la última edición del Sónar Barcelona también hubo mucha presencia de VR e Inteligencia Artificial. ¿Quizá vamos hacia allí? Aunque al final, lo que yo pienso es que la realidad virtual es una de las muchas posibilidades a las que está abierto el mundo digital.
