John Carmack, directeur de la technologie chez Oculus, trouve que le potentiel de la réalité augmentée est surestimé par certains groupes. 

Le moins que l’on puisse dire, c’est que John Carmack n’a pas mâché ses mots. Le directeur technique d’Oculus, invité du podcast américain Joe Rogan Experience, n’a pas été tendre sur le potentiel de l’AR. L’homme a tempéré les dires de Magic Leap et même de son propre groupe, Facebook, sur le sujet. Pour l’ingénieur en informatique, porter des lunettes de réalité augmentée comme un objet du quotidien n’arrivera que dans un futur assez lointain. 

John Carmack contredit Facebook, propriétaire d’Oculus 

“L’avenir de cette technologie réside dans des lunettes AR portables toute la journée et sensibles à l’espace”. Telle est l’ambition de Facebook pour ses technologies de tracking Oculus Insight et Guardian. Mais pour John Carmack, une telle chose n’est pas envisageable dans un avenir proche. L’homme explique que c’est notamment la taille des produits qui pose problème. Les lunettes ne peuvent pas encore être réduites à un format qui les rendraient utilisables dans la vie de tous les jours. 

Les produits créés par Oculus font “la taille d’une boîte à chaussures”, indique John Carmack. Même en réduisant la taille des lunettes AR de trois quarts, cela ne rendrait pas la technologie utilisable au quotidien. “Nous ne l’avons pas construit”, ajoute-t-il de toute manière. 

L’homme qui a participé à la création de jeux cultes (Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake) ne s’est pas arrêté en si bon chemin dans ses propos. Il s’en est aussi pris à Magic Leap, qui, pour lui, a surestimé ” les capacités réelles ” de l’AR. Il ajoute que les gens n’ont pas les moyens de dépenser des milliers de dollars pour des casques AR aux champs de vision limités et aux expériences de jeu moyennes.

John Carmack indique que quelques entreprises ont pu créer des lunettes AR aux formats semblables à des lunettes de soleil. Cependant, les appareils “se déchargent rapidement”, selon le directeur technique d’Oculus. Les propos de John Carmack permettent d’y voir un peu plus clair sur la façon dont progresse la réalité augmentée. Sortir de chez soi avec ses lunettes AR sur le nez ne devrait donc pas arriver de si tôt.

Il y a un an, Magic Leap annonçait son programme pour les créateurs indépendants. L’idée était d’ouvrir la porte de la réalité augmentée à un nombre croissant de développeurs. Ce projet semble commence à porter ses fruits avec PuzzlAR.

Ce prgogramme lancé par Magic Leap proposait des bourses et surtout un soutien technique et humain, qui peut se révéler indispensable face à l’ampleur du challenge d’un lancement sur Magic Leap One. Cependant, cette application en réalité augmentée a réussi à vaincre toutes les étapes.

PuzzlAR inaugure le système

PuzzlAR : World Tour est donc une création de l’équipe portugaise de Ontop Studios. L’idée est de réaliser un portage d’un jeu qui était jusque là disponible sur smartphone et qui va désormais être disponible sur les lunettes de réalité augmentée Magic Leap One. Qu’est-ce qui est au programme ? Vous pourrez visiter des lieux connus un peu partout sur la planète et assembler les monuments à la main comme vous le feriez pour un puzzle 3D.

Ok, on se sent un peu forcés de le dire, ce n’est pas vraiment le concept le plus original du monde, mais cela porte clairement ses fruits d’un point de vue visuel et technique si on en croit la vidéo ci-dessus. Selon Magic Leap, PuzzlAR est le premier jeu / expérience qui est lancé après avoir profité du système qui offre des bourses allant de 20.000 à 50.000 dollars. 6.500 projets avaient été présentés par des développeurs dans la première phase du projet. On peut désormais imaginer que d’autres devraient suivre dans les prochains mois.
