Non, Microsoft n’a pas abandonné la réalité virtuelle et Windows Mixed Reality

Contrairement à ce que l’on pourrait penser, Microsoft ne s’est pas désintéressée de la réalité virtuelle. La firme croit toujours en cette technologie, et réserve des projets pour le futur.

Avec son casque HoloLens 2, Microsoft domine actuellement le marché des casques de réalité augmentée pour PC. En revanche, on peut penser que le géant américain s’est désintéressé de la réalité virtuelle.

En 2017, la firme lançait sa plateforme Windows Mixed Reality. Plusieurs partenaires industriels avaient lancé une première vague de casques VR fonctionnant sous cette plateforme : Dell, Lenovo, Acer, HP, Samsung et Asus.

Ces appareils se distinguaient par leur système de tracking inside-out (sans capteur externe) encore inédit à l’époque. Cependant, les casques WMR n’ont pas vraiment réussi à séduire le grand public notamment à cause d’un manque de contenu.

Malgré d’importantes baisses de prix consécutives, les casques Windows Mixed Reality n’ont jamais dépassé 11,13% de parts des casques VR utilisés par les joueurs Steam. En janvier 2020, ils ne représentaient plus que 8,05% de parts.

Seuls Samsung et HP ont persisté en lançant une deuxième génération de casques (Samsung Odyssey+ et HP Reverb). Récemment, le nouveau casque d’Acer a même été annulé. De son côté, Microsoft n’a pas poursuivi ses efforts et la plateforme Windows Mixed Reality n’a pas connu de mise à jour majeure depuis son lancement initial.

Microsoft a le regard tourné vers le futur de la VR

Cependant, interrogée par le site web RoadToVR, Microsoft affirme qu’il n’a pas renoncé à la réalité virtuelle. La firme déclare qu’elle ” reste investie dans l’amélioration de la plateforme hardware sous-jacente, de Windows Mixed Reality, et attend de voir ce que le futur réserve pour l’industrie “.

Par ailleurs, l’entreprise américaine affirme qu’elle ” continue à croire que le grand public sera intéressé à prendre part à la réalité mixte par le biais de différents points d’entrée, y compris la réalité virtuelle, la réalité augmentée, et tout ce qui se trouve entre les deux “.

Enfin, le porte-parole de Microsoft précise à la source qu’il continue à croire au potentiel d’un écosystème ouvert et dénué de barrières ” freinant l’innovation et le choix des consommateurs “.

En conclusion, malgré l’échec relatif de sa première tentative de percée, Microsoft reste convaincue du potentiel de la VR. De nouveaux casques de réalité virtuelle estampillés Windows devraient donc voir le jour dans le futur…

C’est un recrutement intéressant quant à la stratégie de Microsoft qui vient d’être annoncé sur les réseaux sociaux. Alex Vlachos a rejoint les équipes de l’entreprise de  Redmond.

Après 13 ans chez Valve VR, ce dernier a en effet commencé une nouvelle aventure depuis le mois de septembre dernier. Il vient de le révéler sur les réseaux sociaux.

Microsoft recrute un gros bras de la programmation graphique

C’est un nom très connu de chez Valve qui est donc recruté par Microsoft pour devenir « Partner Architect » dans le domaine de la réalité mixte. Au sein de Valve, il avait notamment géré les expériences collectives du « Lab », mais aussi le système « Chaperon » qui assure votre sécurité en terme de réalité virtuelle roomscale, il avait aussi assuré la première démonstration live du  « Aperture Science Robot Repair ». Bref, un personnage vraiment central au cœur des dernières années pour Valve. Il assurait aussi la présence de l’équipe de réalité virtuelle de Valve dans de nombreux évènements, comme à la Game Developers Conference pour parler des techniques de rendus de Valve.

Par le passé, Microsoft a déjà recruté d’autres grands noms de la réalité virtuelle, comme Mark Bolas, un pionnier du domaine qui était à l’USC jusque-là. Pour l’instant, à la différence de Sony, Microsoft ne semble pas vouloir jouer la carte de la réalité virtuelle avec sa console Xbox, mais ses casques autonomes de réalité augmentée, fonctionnent auprès du grand public mais aussi de l’armée américaine. Reste à voir ce que Vlachos amènera à l’équation à la firme de Redmond.
