Processing Community Day y convocatoria abierta para presentar proyectos – 26 enero

El próximo sábado 26 de enero tendrá lugar en Madrid el Processing Community Day en Medialab Prado. Un evento impulsado por Processing foundation. Como ya debes saber, Processing es una plataforma de software gratuita y de código abierto para aprender a codificar en el contexto de las artes visuales, creada por Casey Reas y Ben Fry. Se complementa con una versión web, llamada p5.js, creada por Lauren McCarthy. Hasta la fecha, Processing y p5.js son utilizados por una comunidad mundial de artistas, programadores, educadores y estudiantes. El objetivo de este proyecto es enseñar a todos los interesados cómo programar y hacer que el trabajo creativo con código sea accesible para diversas comunidades, especialmente aquellas que de otra manera no tendrían acceso a estas herramientas y recursos.

Además de talleres, charlas y networking han abierto convocatoria para presentación de sketches en la fachada de LED de Medialab, mediante la plataforma de programalaplaza.  Convocatoria abierta hasta el 25 de enero, cualquiera es libre de participar, ya que al ser por web, se puede hacer desde casa. El día del evento se podrán ver todos los trabajos en loop y se grabará un vídeo en el que se mencionará a los creadores.

¿Quieres participar? Entra aquí, selecciona «comienza a programar», crea tu “sketch” en p5.js y selecciona la  convocatoria Processing Community Day. Tendrás la oportunidad de verlo en los 14.5 x 9.5 metros de la fachada digital junto a otros trabajos enviados desde todo el mundo.

AMD Threadripper 3990X : 64 cores, mais quelles performances ?

AMD a récemment dévoilé le 3990X, un nouveau processeur Threadripper aux caractéristiques alléchantes : 64 cores, 128 threads, 256 Mo de cache et une fréquence pouvant grimper jusqu’à 4,3 GHz. Le tout pour un tarif annoncé de 4000$ hors taxes, soit environ 3700€ hors taxes, de l’ordre de 4500€ avec.

Reste toutefois à vérifier ce que donne ce déluge de coeurs en pratique, et c’est justement ce qu’a vérifié Puget Systems.

L’entreprise a testé la puce sous divers logiciels : Cinema 4D, V-Ray côté rendu CPU, Pix4D, RealityCapture et Metashape pour la photogrammétrie, After Effects, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve pour la vidéo, Photoshop et Lightroom côté photo.

Les résultats sont nets, et dépendent très fortement du type d’application. On peut en fait les diviser en deux camps :
– pour le rendu CPU, fortement parallélisable, un processeur comme le 3990X arrive en tête et pourra être un choix judicieux selon le budget et les besoins ;
– en revanche, pour tout autre usage, les 64 cores n’apportent rien. Soit l’application n’arrive pas à s’appuyer sur tous les coeurs (cas de la photogrammétrie), soit le gain est ridicule au regard de la hausse de prix. Pire, un processeur avec moins de cores pourra s’avérer plus efficace selon les usages, le tout pour un tarif plus bas.

Globalement, ces benchmarks montrent que la course aux coeurs n’a de sens que pour des situations bien précises, d’autres cas n’étant pas encore (ou ne pouvant pas être) parallélisés.
