Top 5 A/V performances at L.E.V, Madrid 2019 we want to see

This year is a pivotal year for L.E.V. Festival as they take residence in Madrid for the first time. When we attended L.E.V. way back in 2014, we were astounded by the potential of this seemingly small festival in Gijón. It inspired us with its delicate combination of musical and audio-visual performance, its variation between genres and the balance between sit-down performances and exceptionally well-curated concerts. We loved the daytime with the change of venue to the botanical gardens, and ending the day in a church.

1. Plaid – Polymer, Live AV

As LEV themselves state on their website, Plaid is able to fill venues as diverse as the Sydney Opera House, right through to Berghain.

On Warp Records, as they approach their 30th anniversary, Plaid are a clear reference to the industry.

“The problems and benefits of Polymers felt like good themes for this album, their repetitious strength, endurance and troubling persistence, the natural versus the synthetic, silk and silicone, the significant effect they have on our lives.” – Plaid

Dancers, inspired by the colossal quantities of plastic in our oceans, shows that Polymer is much more than just a musical performance, but an artistic reference to the world context in which their creation has been made. The official music video, whilst quite surrealist, and disturbing, is strangely beautiful. We’re really excited to see how this can translate to a live visual performance.

2. SPIME.IM

This seems to be the technological performance of the festival. With growing exploration into the world of virtual and digital technologies, new media art really is at the cutting edge of what’s to come and is an exhilirating way to be introduced to new world contexts.

EXALAND is an AV performance using ‘wearable controllers,’ which we imagine to be a development on what we saw with Chagall’s performance using the mi.mu gloves at Sonar Festival some years back http://www.audiovisualcity.org/avcity/2016/05/23/sonarplusd-chagall-mi-mu-gloves/

These guys have got all of the buzz words Audioreactive Video Projection and an Audioreactive Video in VR/360°, as well as 3D art and electronic music, not forgetting of course, immersive.

We’re interested to see this interactive performance for the visual aesthetic and graphics, and of course, one of the audiovisual artist’s favourite topics: audio-reactivity.

3. HP [HASWELL&POWELL] W/ VISUALS BY MATHIAS GMACHL

We’re always intrigued by a write-up that focuses a lot on the visual aspect of the performance, particularly as this isn’t always common practice in the industry, and the description of Mathias Gmaci, triggers a lot of intrigue.

As director of the studio, Loop, who create ‘experiences and environments that radically rethink the future’, we get the impression that this will be yet another audiovisual performance to remember.

‘Mathias Gmachl is a trans-disciplinary artist, researcher and design thinker. He is director of studio Loop.pH founded in 2003 to form an entirely new creative practice that reaches beyond specialist boundaries by facilitating collaborative spaces, mediating between digital & biological media and intervening at an urban scale to re-imagine life in the city.’ -L.E.V.

4. Nkisi: Initiation Live AV
Based in London, and coming to L.E.V with a new live AV format in collaboration with artist Charlie Hope, Nkisi promises ‘African rhythms, uncompromising European hard dance tropes, foreboding synth melodies and a relentless, galvanising energy, as harnessed for her increasingly kinetic live performances.’

If that isn’t a description to get the juices going, we don’t know what is. Unable to find any link to Charlie Hope’s previous work, we decided we’d leave this one as a surprise (although we did catch a few exciting sneaky glimpses on Instagram of a performance at Kraftwerk, Berlin…shhhh).

It’s always good to leave a performance for surprise, we think.

5. Alessandro Cortini – VOLUME MASSIMO Live AV

Volume Massimo debuted at Berlin Atonal just a few days ago and will tour all the way to the Barbican in London. Like Plaid, the visual aesthetic is photographic, and is said to take the audience on an emotional journey, using music as a map for life’s journey. It tells the story via footage from the family archives.

Synthesizers, combined with memory, this will be another piece to make us think. Oh, and did we forget to mention that he’s best known as the keyboard for Nine Inch Nails, not to mention has collaborated with the likes of Ladytron and is now member of Los Angeles alternative electronic band, SONOIO.

So, what are you waiting for? If you’re planning on attending the event, get in touch and we’ll see you there!

Norberg Festival

NORBERG, July 25-27 2019

Norbergfestival is a 20-year running festival, held on the abandoned iron mine site of Mimerlaven in Norberg, Sweden.

A growing group of artists presents contemporary music, performances, and interdisciplinary works. We make use of what the site provides and we sleep on the ground. We extract what we produce and leave the mine as it was left in 1981.

Norbergfestival brings experimental music and performing arts to the defunct mining site of Mimerlaven, centrally located in the small post-industrial town of Norberg, Västmanland, Sweden.

Three days a year, industrial concrete buildings transform into an international playground where festival visitors experience a multicolored spectrum of electronic music, sound art, and clubs. Norbergfestival offers a unique mixture of live electronic music at the spectacular location around Mimerlaven, an abandoned mining area in the small town of Norberg.

Since it’s inauguration in 1999, the festival has evolved from a utopian counter-cultural assembly to a national front-runner and internationally recognized platform for groundbreaking and unique musical experiences. Together with light and sound installations, workshops in the fields of audio and video and a friendly and creative atmosphere matched by none, this truly makes Norbergfestival one-of-a-kind.

In 17 years Norbergfestival has grown from being a utopian project for a handful of people into one of the most important annual events in the Scandinavian electronic music scene.

Best video projection mapping decor for wedding

Looking to create a bold and unique wedding décor element for your big day? Transform your wedding venue with the help of projection mapping also known as video mapping or video projection mapping. Take your guests on a journey to any city or landscape in the world. Create decorations or memorable instances with special effects on walls, floors, objects or literally anything you like. Unlike traditional décor which leaves with limited décor options and a static décor through the evening, video mapping allows you to transport your venue at the click of a button.

The Basics.

Projection mapping uses high-resolution content to seamlessly project onto walls and ceiling of virtually any event space, transforming the venue into an entirely different and unique environment.  This technology is not limited to flat surfaces or walls, you can project on irregular shapes and turn them into displays. You can even use video mapping on your wedding cake to make that special moment even spectacular. You can buy some pre-made high quality content here, which goes perfectly with any wedding cake.

Mapping essentially means that a complex array of software programs and media servers are used to control the pixels of a projector to match the object you want to project on.

Customize the venue

Video projection mapping allows you to create any effect immediately and affordable. A couple can create visuals journeys which no stat wedding décor could ever achieve.Changing scenes at will, unlike traditional decorations. Virtually create anything you like and I mean anything. Each couple is unique and projection mapping allows you to express exactly that. Once you have the venue mapped with projectors, your guest can enjoy different themes through the day at the push of a button. Every couple can create a unique and expressive environment. Create awe-inspiring visuals journeys for the entire evening. The best part, your guests will remember the day forever.

Content is key.

Once you have the venue and hardware requirements nailed down. Content is what you need to transform the venue, every video mapping show naturally needs content. You can either hire a studio or an artist to create content completely or pick up some of our high-quality video loops that are perfect for your wedding cake and add your own style. Hope you have a fabulous wedding!

Cloudbees / Jenkins World – 2018

Cloudbees / Jenkins World – 2018

Sept 2018, San Fransisco, CA, USA – Oct 2018, Nice, France

For its 2018 Jenkins World Tour, CloudBees gathered a large community of developers from all
over the globe in two locations: San Francisco (USA) in September, and Nice (France) in October.
For these major rendezvous bringing together 2,500 attendees, a wide and neat video projection
with mapping was created using Modulo Kinetic, a powerful video solution by Modulo Pi.

Immersive, a cutting-edge production company based in San Francisco, was in charge of the
entire show for the 2018 Jenkins World Tour in the United States, and France.
The main stage used for keynotes consisted in two wide screens, plus a third screen with a globe
shape in front of them.

In San Francisco, 5 x Christie Boxer 30K were installed to feed the screens on a 135 feet (41
meters) stage. To deal with the challenges of this show, Sean Mason, Founder and CEO of
Immersive, decided to opt for the Modulo Kinetic media server solution: “We work with Modulo
Pi’s systems for all our projector mappings now. Modulo Kinetic is bulletproof, powerful, and
versatile. It has everything in it.”

For both events, Modulo Kinetic was used in a configuration with two Kinetic Vnode servers, both
controlled through one Kinetic Designer. The show was designed to offer maximum flexibility,
with any source that could be routed to any location. Four opening videos were
played, composed of two videos on the side screens and one on the front globe, playing
simultaneously. Immersive teams could also route the PowerPoint presentations on the walls, or
on the globe.

Immersive worked in close collaboration with CGI Interactive, the company in charge of creating
the introduction videos and PowerPoint presentations for the event. Creative teams developed all
content on a template created by Immersive.

An Ascender 32 mixer by Analog Way was in line to do all the switching for the 6 x MacBook and 6
x PCs. The outputs of the Ascender 32 were sent to the Kinetic Vnode servers in charge of playing
the content for stage left and stage right.
Sources also included 2 x cameras for IMAG, and an SDI matrix recording the laptops, mixer, and
camera feeds sent to Modulo Kinetic.

Facing the challenge of adapting the show made in San Francisco to a new venue in France, Sean
Mason and his teams could rely on Modulo Kinetic’s powerful 3D engine for show simulation: “We
were coming to a place that that we’ve never been to before. You have a floor plan and that’s it.
For this reason, we 3D modeled the entire space, and could place our projectors, making sure we
would have the correct coverage.”

The simulation study also turned out to be helpful to project on the globe screen: “In this case,
Modulo Kinetic saved us because if we shot straight on, then the globe got a big shadow. In the
projection study, we had to move the projectors all the way to the side and shoot at an angle to get
behind the globe.”

The stage in Nice being 85 feet (25 meters), Immersive had to redesign part of the show and adapt
the content. The simulation done using Modulo Kinetic also helped select 7 x Barco 30K
projectors. Sean Mason explains: “Projection study is something we always had trouble with in
the past. There’s plenty of time when we’ve done it with other software. It looks good in the
software, but when you get to the site, it’s just not working. This is not the case with Modulo
Kinetic. It includes a library with exact specifications for every projector. Even the lens choice is
accurate. We used to bring two sets of lenses, but now we don’t have to do that anymore. It actually
saves a lot of money.”

Warping and mapping over the globe were done on site, using Modulo Kinetic’s mobile remote
application. “Warp remote is a great attribute, says Mason. Thanks to it, we’re able to get right
next to the projection, and do all the fine-tuning.”
The multi-user remote control software helped save time by working simultaneously on warping
and show encoding.

All show encoding and control was done through Kinetic Designer. Around 40 tasks were created
for the show, as well as custom panels using the system’s UI Designer.

Thanks to the panels, all tasks could be triggered live using Modulo Kinetic’s iPad application.
Creating tasks through Modulo Kinetic allowed to easily deal with last minute changes in the
show, being able to add anything, programming fade outs or loops in the timeline,… “Modulo
Kinetic’s software is very easy to use. It’s very fast to write your cues and make your interface for
the iPad”.

The event that was Immersive’s first international show was a success. The company will work
on the 2019 Jenkins World Tour that will be held in San Francisco and Lisbon next year.

About Immersive:
Immersive is a cutting-edge company that creates dynamic environments for events. They specialize in corporate audio visual (AV), projection mapping, custom content creation, architectural projection mapping, sculptural projector mapping, lighting, audio, staging and rigging. Last year alone, Immersive executed over 180 events in the US. The company was founded in 2012 by Sean Mason. Some of their most iconic work are architectural projections whether on building facades and interior architecture such as The Old Mint in San Francisco, San Francisco City Hall, and Samsung Semiconductor HQ in Santa Clara.
