OK, a finer quality edit in terms of integration of the array with timelapse and video (I hope) and also the array sequences have finally been aligned. Thanks to Cleland Jones and Mira Soulio for editing support! We’ll now look for some original sound via composer Tom Harrer and I am also considering text overlays ‘mapping’ some of the movement in the grid to highlight the investigative elements of the work.

DEMOLIENDA is a project developed by Javier Conte, visual artist who investigates, manipulates and develops audiovisual projects in various multidisciplinary formats. In his creative work he combines graphic design, photography, video, animation and recycling
With a degree in Design, he started to explore media-art disciplines such as VJing and mapping. This initiative arises from the need to express and offer cultural concepts born from Electronic & visual culture.
Each Demolienda liveset is a visual story, containing different inteconnected messages that translate into images his forebodings, desires and protests. Currently he deal with mapping experimentation and VVVV Development for future projects involving architectural spaces.

People can change the sound with a simple hand gesture.
Users can select 4 kinds of sounds and the sounds can be modified with hand movements over the table.
By opening the hands it is possible to exit the sound selection and continue on to modify another sound.
A molecule is placed in the center of the graphic interface, and every sound is represented by an atom.
The molecule represents our planet and the hand gestures represent the modifications made by the people.
Every sound is obtained from a recorded natural sound and the users’ hand gestures makes this sound more or less artificial.

Time-lapse footage taken at the Very Large Array in Socorro, New Mexico; one of the largest Radio Astronomy Observatories in the world.
As a learning exercise, and something to challenge myself, I wanted to try to combine two of my favorite things: motion-graphics and time-lapse photography.
I also wanted to see if I could stretch my editing techniques a little further.
The VLA really is a legitimately amazing thing to see in person. If you’ve ever considered making a visit, you should.
It’s an awe-inspiring feat of human engineering, and the surroundings are gorgeous. Unbelievable skies in New Mexico. I caught some nasty weather, but it was still a great experience. I’m definitely going back!

Sometimes you find the better track on side ‘B’ of a vinyl record. Vinyl-enthusiasts will recognize the principle of B-Seite Festival for visual Arts and Jetztkultur as a prinziple of finding hidden treasures and necessary change – at places u are unlikely to look at.
B-Seite Festival by http://jetztkultur.de/
B-Seite will take place a whole week 17th till 24th of march 2012 in Mannheim, Germany.
If you want to visit, join or learn something, if you like connecting and jamming with other vjs or if you like to help us to make the B-Seite a great festival … come round!
This is the trailer for the B-Seite festival 2011. Check out jetztkultur.de for more information …
Nearly as unique and irreplaceable as the men and women who designed them, the analog machines behind early animation produced in idiosyncratic circuitry pre-digital visuals. The fingerprints of those designs are all over familiar animation from decades past. And one of the most extraordinary of those machines must certainly be the Scanimate. Built by the Computer Image Corporation of Denver, Colorado starting in the late 60s, only eight models were made, of which just one survives. That one remaining unit is in Asheville, North Carolina, near the home of Moog Music and our friend Chris Stack at Experimental Synth. So, of course, we wind up seeing this analog-powered machine driven by Control Voltage from a Moog, at top.
What makes the Scanimate worth revisiting above all else is the fact that it was real-time – pumping out a consistent 60 frames per second, or more than a lot of the digital devices we see today. As a real-time animation device, in fact, it still edges out a lot of the sophisticated digital tools today, from those employed by pros down to the “render it first” workflows of software like After Effects. I wish, indeed, that computer software designers would look back at how these tools worked; even though the hardware is almost impossible to find, the design notions introduced here still could inform new software. They may seem even more relevant today than when they were new, particularly with software’s ability to quickly produce new tools.
Do watch the video here, but you’ve seen the output of this gadget before:
The Electric Company, Logan’s Run, Star Wars, Sesame Street, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, and countless station idents and commercial spots used the tech.
I could say more, but there’s enough information at the site of the remaining machine’s owner, one Dave Sieg, to ensure you don’t get any more work done all week. So I’ll leave it to Dave – and let the Scanimate speak through its eye candy.
Productivity, die!
[scanimate.com]
Here’s a fantastic vintage news report on the tech, as seen through the eyes of the time:
I’ll close with what I think may be one of the best visualizations of periodic waveforms and wave physics I’ve ever seen. Note to self – I need this a lot.
And the rest is history.
To skip to the punchline: Final Cut Pro X appears to at last do multi-camera editing, and do it right, as seen in the video posted by our friend Nilay at The Verge.
To anyone who read deep conspiracy theories into the release of Final Cut Pro X, perhaps it’s time for a gentle reminder. When building massive, complex tools, sometimes developers get it wrong – even if they happen to be Apple. Final Cut Pro was desperately in need of a rebuild, constructed as it was on deprecated, 32-bit-only libraries. That rebuild, charitably, didn’t go as smoothly as some might have hoped. Final Cut Pro X was missing critical features and adopted a user interface paradigm for editing and file management that at best required adaptation and at worst left users looking for alternatives.
But I’ll go out on a limb here and say anyone who believes Apple wanted to alienate their pro market is simply off their rocker. Now, the effect may have been to do just that, but it was unintentional.
It was also clear from the release of Final Cut Pro X that some of those features were to be added back – made even clearer when Apple representatives publicly said as much explicitly in the days following X’s release.
To put it another way: Final Cut Pro X was bold, entirely new, and just plain unfinished. Some folks out there are using it, but in its initial release, Final Cut faced stiff competition not only from rivals like Premiere, but from Apple’s own, trusted Final Cut Pro 7.
With 10.0.3, we get a first look at what a finished version of Final Cut Pro X might be like. New in this version come both features that users found sorely missing, and some new ideas that we haven’t seen in desktop Mac editors before. In brief:
Apple seems not to be content just to add back those missing features, but to do them better than competitors’ implementations. Let us know if you’re testing 10.0.3, and we hope to do the same.
But wait — there’s more.
Reconnect media and exchange files with third-party applications using a robust relink interface. Select media that has been moved or modified, or locate clips that have been transcoded, trimmed, or color graded by third-party tools. Then easily relink to your Final Cut Pro X project or Event.
Yes, by “robust,” this really means “now actually usable.” Media relink was for me the biggest deal-breaking issue in X, causing maddening file management headaches as Apple tried, apparently, to reinvent how locating files work. I’m eager to try this particular fix more than any other.
Also, crucially, Apple is now pointing to a third-party migration tool for FCP 7 users in the App Store:
7toX for Final Cut Pro brings your Final Cut Pro 7 projects forward to Final Cut Pro X so you can use Apple’s powerful new professional editing tools to update or finish your older projects. The lightweight application is simple to use, with drag-and-drop support and progress information. 7toX translates important metadata from your Final Cut Pro 7 Project — including bins, clips and sequences — to a new Event in Final Cut Pro X with the highest fidelity of any translation application for Final Cut Pro. In addition, the application provides clear, detailed reporting after every transfer.
In a relatively rare move, Apple even has a page explaining what they’ve fixed improved:
And check out the migration tool:

Like eerily-lush alien vegetation, Sougwen’s visual design for for Sepalcure’s tour blooms out of drifting shadows. Through some mysterious connection, they unearth some of the dream-like warmth you could feel from Sepalcure’s music, the collaboration by Machinedrum and Praveen.
Having known Sougwen and followed her work for some time, they also manage to assimilate the intricate textures of her hand-drawn work with the 3D digital world. See, previously, our coverage of that side:
Visuals for Shigeto Full Circle, and Reflections on Drawing by Hand
If you’re in Europe or the UK, there’s a chance this talented bunch are coming to your town. (Sadly, not mine this time.) But I also got the chance to talk to Sougwen about her process. Here’s are some quick answers:
Peter: Well, this looks brilliant.
Sougwen: Thanks! I was pleased with how that section of the visuals turned out.
So, these were rendered out first, then performed from the video clips live? How are they projected?
Rendered out first, yes; they’re a short selection in a larger body of clips I queue up in Modul8 using a MIDI controller.
They’re projection-mapped onto a suspended tryptych, which we performed at MUTEK Mexico. [The Mexico City MUTEK festival installment, from the fall, that is.]
And this is really part of a narrative, too, yes, for those who don’t get to see it?
[spoiler alert - skip ahead if you're watching this live and like surprises]
It’s part of the whole AV show — they [Sepalcure] begin with tracks called “Inside” and “Outside.”
So the piece begins as an exploration of this abstract interior: you see fragments at a kind of macro perspective. And at the end of the show, “Outside,” the view pulls out [to] the full model.
How did you build the models?
The shaders I made in Cinema 4D, employing the drawings I’ve developed over the past years to create a sort of husk over the models. As such, they become more sculptural and a framework off which I can play with lighting and perspective.
How did you translate from your drawings, from that medium, to the shaders?
It’s very simple, actually. I assign my drawings to an alpha channel.
Ah, you use them directly.
Yeah, as a husk of sorts.
Any plans for changes in the tour, things you’d like to work on next?
We’d love to further develop the setup — switch it up entirely, collaborate with different artists like Peter Kirn and Hai Nguygen (of Cinder).
I fantasize about being able to use gestural drawing as a controller for the visuals somehow.
Wait, who? That’s my cue to conclude the interview – I know what happens next may involve me. Thanks, Sougwen.
Those dates – the ones with stars should be visual shows, though not all shows are confirmed one way or another. Either way, I think you’ll enjoy the music.

And it’s worth seeing not only the motion visuals, but some of the hand-illustrated album art Sougwen did for this record, which I think was some of the finest, most sumptuous record art this year – I wish more records would come out looking like this.

MUTEK, in Montreal, Canada is a major destination for the electronic music scene. In the past GarageCUBE has attended MUTEK to host workshops and many of the artists who perform during the festival are often using Modul8 for VJing.
Therefore it was exciting to see an installation that literally put the experience of MUTEK on the street vis a vis an interactive projection installation on a building in the city of Montreal during the festival. We were also thrilled to learn that Modul8 was the tool of choice for delivering the video content of this project.
Through the magic of vimeo I was able to contact the people behind the installation and was therefore able to interview Daniel Iregui:
m8.us: First, tell us who you are and what you do.
Daniel: My name is Daniel Iregui and I am the founder of Iregular, an interactive
content creation studio based in Montreal. We create projects like interactive
installations, live visuals and experiential websites.
m8.us: How did this project come about?
Daniel: Mutek, the electronic music festival in Montreal, commissioned our
collaborators in the project Baillat Cardell & fils to create a project on the facade of a building. BC&F later contacted us, Iregular to make these projections interactive. What we decided to do was to adapt the web experience we did before (mutek.org/play) so that the public on the street could interact with installation. The result is Period.
m8.us:What was the creative process for its development? You had the design
first and this dictated the overall look and feel. What technical
elements came into play that altered the appearance of the graphic design?
Daniel: The father of Period. is Play (mutek.org/play), an experiential website
we did with BC&F for Mutek. We wanted to create an experience where the
audience could get the feeling of what the festival was but on the web.
Once we decided to make a large scale installation with the same concept
the look and feel was already done but we had to adapt it to the size of
the building, the angle we could project on, etc. Also now the project
was multiuser so this added a requirement of creating a way to have many
people interact at the same time. That is where the iPhone app came into
place… and that of course came with its own bag of challenges.
m8.us: What made Modul8 an indispensable part of the tools you used? How well
did it ‘play’ with the other tools used?
Daniel: We use Modul8 almost every time we do this kind of project because it
allows us to embed interactive sources (Flash/Quartz) and mix them with
video. It is also very easy to move assets around, rotate them, scale
them, etc… so mapping the projection on the building becomes very easy.

m8.us: Can you share any advice with our community about some of the caveats
involved in producing such a project that you think would be helpful?
Daniel: Yes, go to the location many times. Especially before the installation
of the project because, for example, trees grow. See how people get to
the location and determine how much they will interact with it. The
location is real and you have to work around it, so it is important to
know it very well.
m8.us: What other softwares did you use, and what were the protocols you used
to connect these other technologies to Modul8?
Daniel: For the whole installation we used Modul8. As for the play back of
content and mapping, Flash for the generative content, Max/MSP for the
data management, and web technologies for the iPhone interface. We
communicated with the Flash files inside Modul8 using OSC.
m8.us: What kind of projectors did you use?
Daniel:2x 22K Christies
m8.us: What was the turn around time for the project?
Daniel: 4 weeks.
m8.us: Were their other projects that came about as a result of doing this one?
Daniel: Yes. We took [Period] to Mexico and it was an amazing experience. We are
currently looking for other festivals to present it as well.
For more information about Iregular and their other projects go to see their website at their website: [thisisiregular.com] .

I made a composition to use with kinect and a dancer, or simply the dj. here i’m the dancer, controlling vdmx with an IPad and dancing at the same time! :)
The music is No Good, of The Prodigy’s album Music For The Jilted Generation.

| Playmodes: Blue Beams Laser and sound show Playmodes presents an audiovisual installation based on the synchronization of motorized laser beams and surround sound. Through coordination of sound withe the beams movement, this kinetic sculpture becomes one more element of the landscape, refering with its movements and forms to organic elements such as waves, terrain undulations or wind turbulences, as well as to the new expressive possibilities that new digital creative media offer to sulpture and landscape design. Through a process of research and building an audiovisual instrument has been developed which allows the writing of synchronized laser and quadraphonic noise. Most aspects of design and construction have been based on Open Source processes, shared with online communities, so hardware and software design of the instrument will be openly published on www.playmodes.com |

So how do you show off the fact that you are Russia's largest private bank and at the same time curry a little favor with Moscow's ruling elite? You entertain 800,000 Muscovites with a world-record 25,500 square meter (275,000 sq. ft.) audio-visual projection show to celebrate Moscow City Day, of course. |

I was about to cut a chocolate cake and when I moved the plate on the countertop I noticed a very interesting sound.
One side of the plate was free to vibrate because the tiles were not perfectly even, so by applying pressure with one finger and tapping it with another I was able to create some tonal beats.
I hope you’ll enjoy it!
The recording setup was very simple, Røde NT5, Apogee ONE, Pro Tools 9.

Life Needs Internet - jeroenvanloon.com/lifeneedsinternet
An art project about the impact and the rise of digital technology on different cultures today.
The project was initiated in 2010 when digital media artist Jeroen van Loon started his research by traveling to areas representing the extreme opposites of our possibility to access to internet. Varying from a village in West Papua, where nobody had heard of the concept internet to the bustling metropolis of Singapore, where internet controls society. Here and everything in between he interviewed people he met on his travels.
He asked each person to hand write a letter describing the influence of access to internet on his or her daily life. By looking at our digital world through the traditional technique of handwritten letters, we discover original and personal stories which portray our global digitalization.

Checho vj defines himself as a mercenary of the images and has its notion of what should be their role in the wall of a nightclub; with projections he want to express the movement of human body … the eyes, face, feeling.
He carries out cutting-edge visual creations for the new age; he implements visual space integrated with architectural elements. He also creates interactive visual disc, mapping, multi LED wall displays and works with all musical trends, aurdino direct and monome systems.
References to silent films, classic science FX, retro clips, fractals frequency, rythmic Sequences organic life clips, styles, stop motion, electro rate, visual groove … He likes to communicate dreams with visual animation, his obsession is to create visual environments without dyes or preservatives.

The Rutt-Etra modular video synthesizer may be an early-1970s relic. But it’s an expressive visual instrument that seems even more contemporary and timeless today than when it first appeared. So it’s fitting that a new music video makes its intricate generated analog eye candy the star. Set to Nalepa’s track “Daytime,” the work – by noted visualists Benton-C Bainbridge and V Owen Bush – is an abstract visual poem. Clouds and planets drift out of the lacy, electronic tendrils. It’s a quick ticket to another world. (Watch it above; definitely watch it in “HD.”)
LA-based artist Steve Nalepa tells us:
We made this using a Rutt/Etra — actually [creator] Bill Etra’s personal Rutt/Etra. Benton and Owen are friends with him. There’s less than a dozen physical units left in the world, they only made 2 dozen originally.
Benton and Owen go by Glowing Pictures. Bunch of details of their history and stuff on their website. They just did One Step Beyond last week, VJing for Dirty Projectors. [One Step Beyond is the terrific New York party held on Central Park West at the American Museum of Natural History Rose Planetarium. It's one of those few places where you can always count on top-notch live visuals.]
Here’s the official description:
Daytime’s sinuous imagery was hand-crafted with the Rutt/Etra Video Synthesizer, an analog video instrument built in the early 70s. Like a TV from another dimension, the Rutt/Etra gives artists total control of the screen with knobs, oscillators and sound-responsive circuitry. It is a modular analog computer, programmed with patch chords.
The artists dedicate Daytime to the memory of Steve Rutt, co-inventor of the Rutt/Etra. Steve’s pioneering work as an engineer and entrepreneur helped create the media culture we now live in.
Music by Steve Nalepa.
Video co-created by Benton-C Bainbridge, V Owen Bush and Steve Nalepa.

DK returns with ‘Cymatic Frequencies II’ and as before it’s another AV mix. This is Part 1 of ‘Best of 2011′, taking personal favourites from his mixes this year and adding suitable and sometimes breathtaking visuals to compliment the audio. This Video Mixtape includes a few of the artists Original video’s but in most cases visuals have been sourced from animation, CGI, Short Films, archive footage and edited to each track in the mix. We continue with the second part of Cymatic Frequencies II by DK, the Video Mixtape reviewing some of his favourite mixes from this year with added visuals. Using more Original Videos from the artist this time and the quality of the music is equally as good as Part 1.

Subsculpture 12
motorised measuring tapes, kinect tracking systems, computers, cameras, thermal printer, custom-made hardware and software
dimensions variable
Rows of motorised measuring tapes record the amount of time that visitors stay in the installation. As a computerised tracking system detects the presence of a person, the closest measuring tape starts to project upwards. When the tape reaches around 3m high it crashes and recoils back.
Each hour, the system prints the total number of minutes spent by the sum of all visitors. Commissioned by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney.

Every Sunday, it’s the same old routine! The train clatters through the village and almost shakes the pictures off the wall. In the church, Dad dreams about his toolbox. And of course later Grandma will get a visit and the animals will meet their fate.

processing to MadMapper via Syphon [Test] from espadaysantacruz studio on Vimeo.
Wish you could get Modul8 to take an input from some other tool, so that in addition to playing videos, you could “insert” custom visuals as you play?
Wish you could VJ with Processing – without giving up your VJ tool, too?
Wish you could use Processing with MadMapper for custom project-mapped generative visuals? (I’m going to pause at the tiny handful of people who know what that question means. If you’re still with me — congrats.)
Wish you could do all of this with some other combination of tools on the Mac? (Hint: if it supports Syphon, you can.)
Media artist Miguel V. Espada answers just how to make all of this goodness a reality in an exquisite set of easy-to-follow, step-by-step instructions. Even the render-weary VJ could follow them. (Trust me – been there.)
In fact, I’m just about ready to go through every single one of the tutorials here. Kinect and Processing and Processing and Modul8 and Processing and projection mapping … Miguel, you’re our hero.
[www.miguelespada.es] [thanks, Ilan!]
And all of these techniques promise to get better with time.
Hear that sound?
That’s the sound of visual sets getting done and people’s thesis work getting finished in time for spring and new, cool stuff happening the next time you go out and see visualists play. Mark my words. Start your engines.
Tutorial: Syphon input in Modul8 from instructions on Vimeo.
Vital public service announcement: Want to make sure this all continues to get better? Donate to the Syphon project. Despite the fact that this platform is utterly free to use for Mac users, and despite the fact that it has unleashed incalculable awesomeness on our community, I hear through the grapevine (or was that my HDMI cable?) that donations have been disappointing. Make that cease to be. For the price of just one coffee / Club Mate a day…

Meek FM
Typographic Synthesizer
by Rob Meek and Frank Müller
We had the chance (and honor!) to exhibit the typographic snythesizer Meek FM developed by Rob Meek and Frank Müller. The combination of a custom built hardware controller and software generates new shapes and sounds out of pre-installed typeface vectors.
Like a real musical synthesizer the Meek FM can shape and modify forms (+ sounds) with several parameters. This device shows that there are still a lot of untouched possibilies in realtime graphical instruments.

Leandro Vigas took a trip through Europe last spring, with a few days in Berlin where he provided valuable assistance during a MAdmApping workshop Pedro Zaz of United VJs and I hosted. He had already started doing video mapping projects prior to that and it seems that his visit further refined is ideas about the medium. There is a simple efficiency of this installation along with a refined sensibility and variation of the graphical forms he is using to shift between both a compliment of the forms and their augmentation. There is also a very nice balance between the forms and the space.
