My Respects. I have a few questions in regards to video mapping. I understand the basic concept behind it. But if anyone can enlighten me or point me in the right direction about my questions I would greatly appreciate it.
1. Creating a display. What do I use. My brother is an engineer. He can design anything I submit to him. I want to build a custom dj 3D booth But what do I use. As in LCD screens, projection screen material? I was think build cube or triangle frames out of aluminon and buy a big a projection screen and cut it to fit the space inside of the frames. Am I on the right track?
2. Projector. Do I need one? I would like to be able to set up a dj booth at any club I go to on stage. But club sizes vary and I might not be able to set up a projector exactly where I need it to be in sync with the dj booth. In my head I would like to just be able to run the visuals thru a software inside the dj booth and have it projected on the booth. But I could obviously not be able to use projection screen material to do that if its even possible. And if that is possibly my design would have to be based on the size and shape of the tvs.
Thats really all the questions I have at the moment. I hope I am making sense. I have more questions but these are the primary questions that I have right now that have me confused.

i am wrestling with something that i have wrestled with for a while and its hard to find a straight, or rather, dumbed down answer. i am certainly not a computer programmer so please forgive if this sounds a little beneath more knowledgable types!!!!
anyway, i have been vjing for close to 3 years now and my library just gets bigger and bigger. its standing now at about 2100 clips for my "basic" library (abstract stuff, dance, some "mood" folders etc) and then i have another library for just styles, to adapt to whatever genre i am throwing for that night.
ive been away from the game for about six months and am about to get on the train again with regular gigs, so i was going through my library and realizing i had not resolved the basic problem, despite my splitting my library up into "basic" and "use as needed".
first off, the basic specs- i have a macbook pro (2.2 Ghz Intel Core Duo with 4 GB RAM) and I use VDMX (the 7.8 version i believe it is- not the newest one which is not a match for my operating system). I rendered my clips in IMovie HD using their photoJPG mov format at 70 percent, as reccomended pretty much everywhere i read, at least for VDMX. i have used modul 8 but don't care much for the media bin setup so i go back to VDMX all the time. its what i learned on.
but my RAM can't handle it. I tried dumbing them down even further, file size wise, into H.264, but some of the stuff i have made in After effects looks like absolute crap, so i nixed that idea. and i know that H.264 or smaller file size does not neccesarily equal better results in terms of CPU. But CPU isn't my problem, its simply the RAM. and i am topped out on my RAM and can't put in anymore.
thing is, i like having all these clips. it means i can turn on a dime, stylistically, and be prepared for every contingency. i'm sure alot of content junkies feel the same way- you want to have enough stuff on deck to keep surprising people. and its a great feeling to be able to match up what the lyrical content is to to the visual. you have to have alot of clips for that and i guess i am addicted to that feeling.
but how do you resolve the fact that once i load in the first 2000, VDMX crashes, hangs, slows down, gets choppy, etc? hell, my library that i use for my own stock use (making videos etc) is at 4000. my performance library is already honed down and probably about the same size, tho i did dump alot of stuff as not being up to snuff.
anybody had these issues? i know alot of vjs don't run this kind of load, but alot (maybe most) of vjs don't do the variety of genres that i do, so its kind of necessary unless i want to stay in one genre, which i have no interest in.
anyone had these issues and resolved them? should i just suck it up and streamline more, or switch to a different codec? i think i have tried them all, but maybe there is one that will retain the quality without using the RAM. any ideas?

Very late post, so I hope somebody can give me some inputs.
I got booked to do visuals to a 2 x 15 min dance performance by some contemporary dancers in club setting. Its an experimental electronic music night. I have never worked with dancers, but we had some rehearsals. I cant seem to get it right, to add something to the dance with my visuals. Either it overshadows the dancers, or it becomes a distraction, a side element. Like adding alot of layers which doesnt have anything to do with eachother.
1. For those who have worked with dance performers, how did you time your visuals? Did you try to add something to the performance in terms of meaning?
2. ""$#%"$&$& to be honest, I dont know what questions to ask even. I feel Im really going on deep waters here. Its easy to do club visuals, but to add something to a scene I have no experience with is much harder. The promoter is aware of this, and he wants it to be a learning curve over the next months. So I am really looking for advices from those who have worked with dancers, what you did, what worked well, what didnt work well (!)
Hope to get some insightful answers!

Lately I have been trying out Resolume Arena, and I must say I am really impressed. There is a lot of functions in Resolume that Im missing from Modul8, and the DXV codec is really helpful. I like to VJ and do mapping all in one software. I have used a mac since 2008, and I was very happy with it at first, but lately I seem to thrift away from Apple´s software, and I have been contemplating buying a PC. Furthermore, I dont think Lion is that stable as Apple try to hype it. So Im asking for opinions here. Another reason is that Im teaching VJing at a private school, and would love to use more platform software as to make my job easier.
1. For those who have in-depth experience with both softwares, what do you like/dislike about each? What do you see in the future of both softwares?
2. Have anyone of you made the switch from a Mac to PC? If so, what were the benefits/drawbacks?
3. Is the DXV codec as cracked up as Resolume claims it be? Is it twice as fast as PhotoJPEG in some cases?
Hope to get a lot of positive replies! :)

ok, so ive finaly managed to some of the example FFGL's ( via sourceforge ) to compile and ive managed to do some minor tweaking and get them running ( after trouble shooting the bits where i broke the code...lol )
im still pretty much in the dark about whats occuring - its my first real programming attempt ( tried to play with some GLSL last year, didnt realy succeed although i think some of that has helped me to work out the little i do know for FFGL ) most of my learning has been via the "change it and see what happens" method.
ive had a search and found very little online presence ( basicly the forum and developer mailing list on sourceforge ) are there any other places i can pose questions to people as i think mine might possibly be a bit basic for the developers list ) are there any other suggested resources or bits i should brush up on. is anyone willing to be at the mercy of my emails that i can pop questions too?
any suggestions, thoughts, ideas, contacts appreciated :)

The GoPro HD Hero2 specifically is a great little camera with all kinds of exciting ways to use it. Not only does it record excellent wide angle HD video but it is also packed with an 11 megapixel sensor for still shots. I am starting to use mine to document all my gigs and have found it works pretty well in the dark when set up for time lapse recording. The camera really relies on decent lighting but the still shots are a longer exposure and pick up a lot more in the dark compared ti the video. I mixed up some footage with other stuff filmed on the GH1 and posted them to my you tube channel if you wan to check them out.

Hi guys,
It's my first post here. I've installed a Matrox TH2G in our church, with three projectors. The L & R projectors are working fine, but the centre projector isn't. Using 3x Altona Passive DVI extenders.
If I take the centre projector down off the roof and plug it in with a normal DVI-D to DVI-D cable, it works fine.
So the centre output of the TH2G isn't compatible with the Altona extenders. I have also tried 2x cheap HDMI extenders from different parts of our building, none of which work.
My question is -
Has anyone around here found a DVI over Cat 5 extender that works with TH2G?
OR should I just buy a long DVI-D cable? The run is about 25 meters, which seems very long for DVI.
Thanks in advance for your knowledge!

I've been working on this for a while now, and thought I'd share with you guys. Its kind of a toy at this point, but it would be cool to get some feedback. Its a Cocoa app wrapping a QC Comp that uses a ps3 controller to controller different parameters and options.
Most of the comps and effects it plays are mine, though a few are still borrowed from people you may know. I'll take them out eventually, but if you'd rather i didn't distribute it let me know.

Hey All- I'm a musician/producer in the So.california area. I've got a small recording/performance space that I'd like to utilize projection mapping and some vj type visuals ( more so the 3d projection mapping )
I've been scouring the web for tutorials/how-to's and I've come to the point that I think hiring someone that knows this stuff in and out would be money well spent.
i'd prefer someone in the Los Angeles or San Diego area that could physically see the room to advise, but if you are an expert and think that this could be done via Skype, that's cool too.
I'm well versed in audio/recording/production, but know VERY little about lighting and even less about VJ'ing.
The room is aprox 30x25' with 14 ft ceilings. we do very small live recording/video capture of "unplugged" performances with bands.
What's really missing is a visual component. definitely too small a space to utilize traditional concert lighting, so projection seems to be a better fit ( and it's so damn cool, especially the 3d stuff)
If you think you can help, please contact me at:

thanks much!

Hi guys! I'm testing the last version (4, not arena) on my new notebook (Asus N75SF, i7 2630)
there is something really weird going on with the Fps
when I start reasolume, fps=55/60, but when I set the output on DISPLAY2 (1024x768) immediately Fps=12! Even without any clip video running!
I guess there is some setting on my videocard (I already tried modifing the Vertical sync, but nothing)
the card is a GeForce GT 555M (
www.nvidia.com/object/product-geforce-gt-555m-us.html)
and yes, driver are update
I tried an old version (3.3.1) and the result are the same: fps=70 without output, and Fps=13 when output on DISPLAY2 (1024x768))

Hi all,
I'm wording in a very specific setup that i woud likje to tell you About.
I want to switch beween 4 camera's with a footswitch, while i am sitting bewind a table center stage.
The idea started a long time ago i saw à clip on YouTube wereld Simone used Modul8 to use camera's in a VJ setup. And explained that up to four camera's could be used.
I bought Modul8, but Sion found out that i cannot connect 4 camera's to my MacBook pro, either webcam's or dv's.
A friend of mine suggested arkaos VJ, that we now have running on a window-pc, with 4 webcams. There are short breaks wen switching The Cannes but it seems to work.
I am a little affraid of it running steady, so i am wondering what else is out there.
I could simply buy an Edirol V4, but cash is low.
Is there an easier and cheaper alternative with the possibility of a foot switch?
After all, it only has to change input signals, no effects or fancy stuff needed.
I hope you have some ideas for me.
Thanks a million!

This is an open thread for anybody keen to partner on some different band-based projects my friends and I work on.
Most of the music happens in Brisbane but were also keen on the Goldcoast and other areas. I guess the plan is to create a more inclusive environment with visuals.
There are a few projects ranging from experimental rock through to ambient classical guitar weirdness and electronica.
We don't make much money out of this so it would just be for the love of it and experience (plus a few drinks and a cut of what we make).
Venues would vary as we are after a long-term partnership.
Any kind of style of art is welcome but something generated or interactive with the music would be a major plus.
If you're keen please contact

This is a numpty question I'm sure but I can't find the answer. I'm going to do a VJ tutorial for a bunch of school students and thought Neuromixer would be suitable. I've used it before and can load it on a PC. It loads on my macbook (I'm less familiar with macs) but it will not play files, even though it seems to load them. I'm obviously missing something really obvious and any suggestions appreciated. (I'm having the same problem with the pro and lite versions).

EWOCprojects proudly presents its latest development EWOCvj, an open source (GPL) VJing application ready to take the world!:p
We have the intention to use this free program to drive a world wide 'collective' of video and other artists to use EWOCvj in parties/theater/installations and these artists being communicative about their efforts, also setting up stories/photos/videos of hotspot activity featuring the videomixer on the EWOCprojects website. Also encouraging crosstalk between people involved.
The application is at the moment distributed as a Linux LiveCD, pop it in your machine (minimum quadcore res 1600x900) and start performing!
EWOCvj is under continual development but can be used and is already used for variable VJ tasks (production ready). To use the program one needs one or two quadcore computers (PAL 25f 720x576 output) or dual core (15f 320x240 - not yet supported - soon) and the application is specifically written to be used with the Vestax VCI-100 MIDI mixing'n'scratching deck, you won't be able to use it without one, you also need two Korg nanoPADs connected; maybe future will see a mouse-only interface? When using two computers, one can VJ with two persons, the video database being on both machines, with one preparing videos with loop and effect settings and sending all this data to the other machine, where the other person performs the live mix. EWOCvj features 46 realtime video effects with 5 effects per deck (two decks A and B) and per-deck saturation settings, 10 video wipes, a normal and inverse chroma key, one video+effect monitor per deck, video scratching, Quicktime recording of monitors or mix, 32 video bank in 4 saveable 8 video parts, 8 videos in preset bank for direct triggering with Korg NANOpad2 and another NANOpad2 serves as loop input recorder/player. Videos and parts can be sent to other locations on the same or other machine. Most effects have a parameter, controlled by a turning knob. The video database consists of Quicktime movies 720x576 25f and one needs to transcode to the dv codec.
EDIT: program also supports Photo JPEG codec.
We know this program needs a lot of hardware, thats why we would really like to know if anyone is using it on any projects, also feedback and feature requests are always welcome. Consider this program "feedback-ware", if you use it, let us know at
paleajed@gmail.com! We'd love to hear from you.

Documentation still under construction. Let us know if you need help!

I've been using mesh material (from fabric shops or John Lewis), hanging it at different depths to create a 3D screen effect when the projector shines through.
Does anyone know any companies that make these to specification? Every gig we seem to be trimming and cutting (which makes the material curl) and spending ages hanging. I'd like to get some made to fit. KnowwhatImean?

Hi people,
I ve a question.
What's the best codec or method to play video loops bigger than 8k?
I tried a lot yet, and still not find a good way to do it.
Also using SSD and fast processors/videocards the problem is the codec.
Many of them die into the 8k barrier. Need to say that softwares like FCP and After FX has also limitations. FCP is 4k. Adobe Suite cannot deal with 10k.
I m supposing that nowadays the best method its to play JPG sequences instead of Quicktime/MPG4/WMV loops.
And look I m not telling about 16k :) - I could imagine that challenge to do it with just one powerful machine.
Respect!

Hello,
Lets be clear, I'm a beginner (and I'm not fluent in english but i'll do my best).
Thanks in advance for your understanding.
I'm not pretending to become a VJ (for now) and here is the result I would like to have. Please let me know if it's possible and what I should use to do so.
=> While my friends are mixing, I'd like to display video samples that I previously selected (most of them are on Youtube).
The trick is that I want them to be "synchronized" with the sound.
Let me explain : you know how Winamp visualization is synced with the sound ouput? I'de like to do the same with my own videos.
For instance, I can imagine that I could define some "key points" on the sample and the software could display the video faster or slower between theses "key points" based on the BPM.
If your not lost yet (I am ^^) please let me know if you have any idea.
Thank you,

Hi folks,
It's been a while since I've been on her, and I hope all are well. I'm hoping to get advice from others who are working in touring situation. We have been using standard screen material that I cut lose from a projector stand and have been hanging it. It doesn't really fit the asthetic of the stage with the band, and I'd like to do something about that. I'm thinking a more natural (and durable) canvas material. Something think that can handle the road and more easily fold up (and be washed when it gets too dirty). Can anyone recommend this or another solution? I'm thinking something around 16' wide by 6' tall with those metal eyeholes sewn into the edges to make it easier to tie.

Photographers face copyright threat after shock ruling
“Photographers who compose a picture in a similar way to an existing image risk copyright infringement, lawyers have warned following the first court ruling of its kind.” —amateurphotographer.co.uk
First reply by PCProject (the censor :D ):
I am not quite sure how this would stand up on appeal. I think a case 'could' be made that all one has to apply is apply a colour pass filter in camera to achieve the same result.

Greetings VJ community,
I've recently started gigging at a regular venue on saturdays. Since then I've been approached to do shows at other venues & the need for a professional screen is needed.
Right now I have a piece of white fabric that I picked up at the local craft store that im thumb tacking to the wall with white thumb tacks. It works perfect for THAT venue (and probably only that venue)
I am looking at getting a stand/screen that I can use pretty much anywhere.
I am looking at this stand
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...rt_System.html
its 12ft by 10ft and has tri pod legs. I figured that if I needed it to be higher than 10ft I can hang it from a ceiling with hooks and rope and just keep the tri pod legs closed.
Heres my question:
What kind of screen should i build/get for this stand? Is there material that I can use for FRONT & REAR projections? How do you think I should fasten it to this stand? Do you guys even think this is a good stand?
Does anyone have a good resource for information on screens? I've been looking around but havent found anything that has brought me to a purchase. Right now I'm pretty in the dark when it comes to proper screen materials.
I'm looking to get the stand and material ordered by Friday.
Thanks & Looking forward to a responds,
Corpus

Is there a way to route multiple outputs using resolume. I have a video card with 4 VGA outs I want to use three for projectors and one for a control monitor. Does anyone know a way of routing different layers to different outputs or something like that. I am having a hard time figuring it out but according to the resolume site it seems like it is totally possible.

I just got resolume and an APC20, I was wondering if anyone has mapped this and has a file they can send me? Or an explanation of how to map this in a functional and useful way. I am using four independent video outputs so the mapping would reflect this (meaning it would reflect the control of different layers).

I'm a newbie, and have been trying to figure out what's best hardware and software for my scenario. I have a video editing background in Final Cut, but I'm having some trouble wrapping my head on how to keep two separate laptops in sync.
I want to VJ on my MacBook Pro w/ 10.7 with a triplehead (or something similar) to send video to two or three projectors. My bandmate wants to use Reason 5 on his Windows 7 PC to perform music live and somehow send sync messages to my MacBook so my MacBook knows when to start the video track, etc.
He already has clips that are synced to the bpm, I would just need to put them in a program like Resolume, GrandVJ, etc. and then be able to mess with them once they are triggered, which software would be best to do that with, and has the most expandability, but not too much of a learning curve? Would we be using MIDISync? Or are there other sync options? Is there any 3rd party software/hardware needed/desired to keep our machines in sync without much latency? I only have a 25 key Axiom to trigger stuff with now, but eventually would like to upgrade to something like a Jazzmutant Lemur a la NIN circa 2008 craziness.
Also, would he need to use something like Ableton Live instead of Reason? Since Reason really isn't made for live gigging use.
Any help would be appreciated.

Anyone got any suggestions for a midi trigger device I could conceal in left hand palm. It's for use during a non-traditional AV style show, my right hand is occupied, I'm standing and moving around as part of the show, just need a single trigger going to VDMX in such a way that it's not obvious that I'm pressing a button.
Wireless would be handy to, so I'm thinking some kind of touch pad stuck to my palm that I can press with one finger going to a transmitter hidden up my sleeve?
Anyone got any ideas?

I just spotted that Blackmagic have released an SDK for their switchers - this should open up the ability for someone to make a 3rd party controller app that supports MIDI/DMX/OSC.
Unfortunately I'm no coder so can't jump in and try to make something myself.
The SDK is included (as a beta) in the current ATEM 2.8 Drivers -

The last released version of FFRend (2.2.1.5) had a bug that caused the entire desktop to flicker whenever a row view was updated. Since just about every command updates one or more row views, the desktop flickered like crazy. You'd think I would have noticed it during testing but I normally run FFRend full-screen. I'm pretty embarrassed about it. :(Anyway please take the latest version, which fixes this lame bug and some others too.
Download:
[ffrend.sourceforge.net]
I would greatly appreciate it if any FFRend users who hang out here would take the new version out for a spin and report back if they see anything weird. I'm especially worried about the row view code, because that's what caused the desktop flicker bug in the first place. The Freeframe Parameter and MIDI Setup row views are now supposed to remember the scroll position separately for each plugin. Try switching back and forth between a plugin that's scrolled and one that isn't. Do you see any painting artifacts, or does the view paint smoothly?
This version also fixes a bunch of problems related to synchronization of oscillators between plugins, which crept in with V2 as side effects of parallel processing. The earlier versions of V2 would lose sync between plugins at the drop of a hat. It should be a lot better now. The problem was basically that in a pipeline each plugin has its own frame of reference in terms of time, so it's necessary to compensate for that in various places. To debug it I had to make a pair of special Freeframe plugins, one that stamps its parameter directly onto the frame as a number, and another that draws its parameter onto the frame as a waveform, like an oscilloscope. They're pretty handy actually. I can make them available if anyone wants them...

I started using madmapper alot more seriously lately, and I´m quite happy with the mapping projects I´ve made so far. The only issue I have with it so far, is that it lags like a m***********! I have the newest Macbook Pro with 1024 Vram, 8gb ram, 2 x Vertex 2 SSD´s, so I feel my hardware should be able to do a much smoother playback. I use Modul8 + Madmapper with a Triplehead2go, exporting through syphon 5 - 10 layers of 640 x 400 h.264 clips to maybe 15 - 20 quads or triangles in madmapper. I played a gig a couple of days ago, and the machine must have went down to 10 frames a second or something at points. Am I expecting too much of my gear?
Also, I would love to hear how MadMapper handles system resources. Is it a GPU intensive program? When Madmapper makes several quads of one video, how much will that tax system resources compared to making the same amount of video files? What kind of resolutions, and how many layers do people using modul + madmapper typically use?
Long rambling, but hope to hear some responses.

Hi
A while ago I made a tutorial for how to customize your midi controller to your needs with bomes midi translator.
[vjforums.com]
This method was very easy and worked fine, but there were some limitations. You had to run 2 bome programs, and midi ox to split the midi signal. It worked flawless, but it took a while to setup. I also wanted to add some new functions that weren't possible with bome's midi translator.
So I started to do some experiments with max/msp and vvvv. Because I'm not familiar with node based programming, I looked for a more traditional programming language. I found processing, that's based on JAVA. Processing is quite easy if you know your basic programming (classes, loops, if...). You can load a library that includes a certain aspect (OSC, MIDI, user input). Another good thing about processing: it's free!
So I started to build a program. First I used themidibus (the easiest solution for midi) but this library had some serious performance issues. It takes +-15 seconds to open a midi input/output (with high cpu usage). When the input or output is initialized, it works fine. (not sure this is a bug on my computer or not)
Then I took a look at rwmidi, this library is a lot harder to use but doesn't has the startup issues.
Usage
The program is made for resolume 3 (with no midi out), but if you can do a little programming you can adapt it to resolume 4 or any other program. I even made midi feedback for resolume 3 (not in this version). The program took each second the color of different positions on the screen, if those positions are a certain color (yellow), the clip is active and the midi controller changes it's color. (with some things to make sure you didn't scroll in the layers).
The start button activates bank 1, stop button bank 2, rec button activates a "fader mode". The fader mode makes each clip collumn a fader. These faders are OSC mapped to the dashboard of the (1->4) composition and layers (5->8). With the collumn next to the clips, you can change the active layer in fadermode. In bank mode the fist button clicks on windows explorer (on my computer) and the 2nd opens adobe bridge.
If you want to use these button clicks, you might have to change the x/y values in the program.
You need:
OSCP5
NetP5
ControlP5
Rwmidi
link: [www.mediafire.com]
The program and annotations are in dutch, buth shouldn't be to hard to understand :) Some annotations are in english.
This program is not tested with OSX, I don't know the libraries I used are compatible with OSX (rwmidi might have problems with coremidi from osx)
So now you can use this source to make your own, try to understand it. And the internet is your friend! Good luck

I think as visual artists/VJs we should be aware of this issue and how it pertains to us. The work of a VJ can be sampled or self created. Either we use other peoples work through sampling or we create our own work. For some there's the method of blatantly ripping/pirating others endeavors for their own use and abuse for personal gain whether its financial or not.

I am looking for a solution that would allow me to capture 4 video streams at 720P resolution (with HDMI connectors ideally) and record them as files.
It can be a quad-HDMI-inputs capture card, or two dual-HDMI, or 4 single-HDMI, or maybe it's 4 standalone recorders with an ethernet port to give file access through a network. I am really open to all ideas at this phase.

I'm in the USA and it seems like a ton of DJs are adding video to what they do. (just reading on the net). Are they mixing music videos as in rapper guy showing his bling and hoes shaking fat asses into the camera?
If so,
Who would want to go to a club and "watch TV"
Are there videos available other than pop shit?
Is this happening in other country's?
I'm a skilled DJ that also is a skilled VJ but I could never see my self playing "music videos". I could see my self making custom motion graphics to the music I mix but I think I'd rather improvise live with my custom clips with my APC40.
Any thoughts on this subject?

hey just a quickie for anyone who maps with a 3d software.
basically would love to know if you use orthographic camera for the mask render of a 3d model of your target buidling or a perspective camera with the same atributes as your projector lens.
I took some photos from projection lens location, with correct lens ratio 100mm for a 2:1 lens
built a model in maya from it, created some renders of the building and took that as my test image to project back on to the building.
The image didn't really line up that well, nothing mad mapper couldn't fix but when i thought about it was because the renders were from a 30mm camera sitting in the scene.
so thinking about it, the projected image traveling from the lens of the projector will get a slight distortion before it hits the flat building facade. so creating a perspective camera in the scene in the same location and lens setup as the projector would be the best? or in practical terms it better to just use an othographic camera render?
i wont have the chance to do much more testing before a load of the animation will be done so any thoughts / experience gratefully received.

FIXED: I tried unplugging the mini displayport and plugging back in (before I tried the same with the VGA end and it didn't work) (sorry for the mess)
Hi, I've been trying to play at home with the projector I borrowed from my friend's club. I'm a starter level vj hobbyist and I have no experience with projectors.
I am using a 15'' MacBook Pro. The projector is an Optoma EP716.
I bought a Mini DisplayPort to VGA cable from the local Apple Store yesterday and connected my Mac to the projector.
MacBook --> Mini DisplayPort to VGA Cable --> VGA Cable --> Optoma Projector (VGA Connected to VGA-in on the projector)
'No Signal' error is finally gone but now all I am getting is a blank page. There is nothing going on the wall from my Mac. I'm a hardware noob so I need help :ı
Edit: By the way it say 'Source Found' but still no image.
Anyone have any tips for fixing this?
Thanks,

Hi everyone, I need some help deciding what direction togo in terms of software... I really am at a loss.
Quick Background - I am a hardware guy at heart, alot of love for that... and a hardcore Vixid user. all experimental personal art projects include hardware controlled with clip launching midi loops controlling hardware and modul8, which is my software love - art passion:
[vimeo.com] ...
I also have a deep relationships with many free-frame plugins.
I need to change directions in terms of software... with my company we do interactive video booths , or portals, and design " digital video playgrounds"
www.playatta.com
so anyway, M8 does not cover it anymore, I need stability and automated systems... I also cant save a composition in M8... I have to save a whole project.
Im looking hard at Touch Designer, Watch Out and Max6... and maybe Isadora...
TD - intense learning curve, no freeframe, build VFX from the ground up, most potential for full system
Max6 - Learning curve... great community, timelines? unlimited potential, but alot of programming
Watch out - EXPENSIVE, unknown realm, too much power for what I need
I need:
Timeline based automation
Kinect interaction friendliness
OSC control programming
Blending modes
Chromakeying
Reliability
Stand alone app building
HD-SDI capture / input
Video Memory Cache ( so I can reverse and "scratch" live video in )
Im into creating the virtual sets in other softwares, and then simply compositing them together live with camera feeds... but I need VFX, and plenty of them.
I essentially want to build a stand alone sotfware system that does this:
Vimeo Videos
( skip around for the "video portal" video... composite )
... in HD, with automated control variables, kinect interaction... Im getting ready to devote my life to it. I just am at a standstill in terms of selecting the software.
all opinions and help is greatly appreciated

I wouldn't mind a nice high-end Quadro but anything of the newer range above entry level is out of my price range.
I have seen some old Nvidia Quadro 5500's for sale for £150 and am wondering if in 2012 it is still worth getting hold of one, as opposed to getting a newer card?
Will the drivers/hardware of the 5500 still be relevant and take full advantage of software?
5500 uses DDR2 memory, whilst all newer cards use at least DDR3 (not that I understand much the difference!), though new entry levels only have one DVI output... I'm primarily using this at home.
My PC on the graphics front will be used for After Effects, Photoshop, Vegas and Resolume.
Cheers for any advice.

Hello everyone,
I am new here and have been reading posts for the past few hours and haven't seen this question yet. All apologies if it has already been asked.
A few friends and I are pretty new at this and was wondering how many of you go about lighting the DJ or talent without washing out the projection in smaller venues. I'm guessing a pin light or a real hard light with no diffusion? I thought of maybe adding a couple soft lights to the booth facing the DJ but am concerned it would only be a distraction for him.
We are trying to shoot videos of these events but the DJ is always hidden in the dark. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

We need a definition, but I'd hate this thread to get derailed by ponderous arguments over what is and isn't mapping, so I've started another thread for that
here. Besides, we all know what it is pretty much.
I suggest people post in this thread examples with dates, that can eventually be compiled into a page on VJC perhaps?
I suspect myself, we'll find examples of it in Victorian Era Magic lantern shows..

Hi everyone,
One of my projects for this year is to create interactive art that people can easily connect to, and control, with their iPhones and Androids. I'm pretty sure I'll be using OSC. What I want to do is figure out a way to allow multiple OSC clients to connect to a single server, and filter them at the server level. One possibility is to have each client connect on a separate port, but that adds complexity on the client side. Ideally, I could allow people to connect to a wireless network and automatically be assigned some visual parameters to play with, in such a way that there is no overlap of the parameters controlled by different clients. Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing, or know of code examples they could point me towards? All tips greatly appreciated.
cheers,

Hello all, thanks for your attention.
I'm running the video design for my collective's anti-opera. I have two video sources that I will project in real time on the stage, so two projectors as well. Though I'd like to keep the signals separate, I'd like to add the same effects to both videos.
I was thinking of running a two laptop set up with Resolume Avenue on each one and then using a MIDI controller to send the same commands to each laptop.
Thoughts? It should be easy enough to split the signal from a controller, no? Any controllers you would recommend? Most of the mixing/modifications are effects based.

Simple setup, multiple HD video playback, clip position, looping, video clip loading all how you expect Ableton to use video.
WITHOUT the need for Max4Live.
This is JAM2.5. A video application that plays video content, images, and quartz composition loaded into your Ableton Live project. JAM2.5 supports syphon input and output, allowing you to pipe your output from ableton into any syphon support application.
We are on the last stages of testing before release so please bring some input to the table.

So here is my question; I want to change the still image or animation with income of the sound to the other still image or animation. For example without any sound the image A is on the screen and when a bold noise comes screen changes to image B with direct cut. Is there any plugin to help me in the library with that or should i do it manually and how do i do that ? :D
Sorry for the bad grammer though. Hope you can help me.

PLEASE HELP:
Besides trying to us little projection mapping tool I've attempted to use vvvv, video projection tools (also having issues - missing .dll's with v5.1 and v6 very very slow + kills computer) and madmapper (not free :(, so can't really download a usable version).
Can anyone point me in the right direction I should take to be able to do projection mapping onto a few white cubes, as soon as possible.
Anything would be much appreciated, I'm really struggling to find some software that's (relatively) simple to use.

Hi,
I'm new to the board and this is my first post, I'm also new to VJ'ing I am a Ron Paul supporter and I have been ATTEMPTING to VJ some Ron youtube clips. I've been working with PiTiVi on Ubuntu. I have 3 different machines and no matter what I do... it crashes... doesn't save properly... won't edit correctly.
Hours and Hours, Days and Days... Truthfully I've been attempting this project on and off since 2008 campaign... I'm fed up. You guys are the experts / I don't have the right equipment / I'm a carpenter not a VJ.
So... Is there anyone out there that would be willing to donate some of their VJ time to the cause of liberty?
Specifically, I'd like to be able to "direct" a VJ to splice clips of Ron Paul's stances on various issues to Romney's (and some of the other GOP) stances on the same issues. No doubt, with the right skills, a 2 minute clip could be put together in less than 30 minutes.
I would provide the splice points and links to the youtube clips. I'm looking to create multiple 2 minute clips, one for each issue, and upload them to ronpaulflix.com where there is great potential for exposure into the thousands. Of course I'm open to the VJ's creative insights.
I have some really great ideas. At one point I had a 2 minute clip put together on Medical Marijuana / Hemp that flowed great and looked great... then it crashed, multiple times. *frustrated*
If you're in to help... post below and send me a PM with your email.
Grassroots rule!
thanks,
presence

Okay so, I played a few festivals in 2010 (glasto, big chill) as part of a visual collective. I missed out last year due to relocation. Now Im establishing myself and playing gigs as a solo artist but I'm not to sure who I should approach. Promoters, bands/djs or the organisers? And is there additional information I should write in or any hints and tips for getting booked for a festival? Are there agencies that people go to to book their VJs for festies. Though I know mostly its who you know, not what you know. Any advise/contact info is welcome.
Cheers guys
D.

Hello,
I have about 6 months of experience in VJing and projection mapping, but my work has been limited thus far to projecting onto flat shapes hung from the back of concert stages, spheres, hemispheres, and one building. I've masked them and used Resolume Avenue and custom viz effects as the content.
I'm now wanting to move into 3D projection mapping by using 3D models as the mask instead of an alpha map so that I can control the scaling of textures, etc., but I'm having trouble arranging the virtual camera (in Autodesk Maya) to match my physical backdrops. I understand that the camera must match the angle and position of the projector in relation to the objects being projected on, but I'm finding this to be more difficult to setup than I would expect. Any advice on setting the virtual camera in terms of focal lenth, etc. would be apprceiated.
Also, I have seen videos with 3D objects that seem to move through the space as if they were not being affected by the surface of the building being projected on at all. I have a theory of how to do this, but I have no idea which software would need to be used in order to do this. Any advice on creating the illusion of 3D objects moving in a space would be appreciated.
If none of this makes sense then I think that it would be easier to say that I am trying to create effects similar to ones found in the video below.

Again, any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

We are playing around with some a/v stuff, and it is starting to look decent but one problem we have been ignoring is how to practically compose sound at one place ? or at least get so we output the sound from one place.
As it is now we are doing it from 3 laptops just running resolume with the sound attached to the clip and then doing each outputs over trippelheads.

Sup all :D
I'm pretty excited cause 2 weeks ago a major event organizer in my area gave me a call and the opportunity to be the VJ at his festival in LA. I was pretty surprised to get this gig, since it was just word of mouth from another local promoter who I did free work for a few months back. Basically this is my 3rd, but 1st paid gig. (~6 months of self-taught content production/mixing experience)
I'll be responsible for 12 hours of visuals on the main stage with an insane, albeit mainstream electronic music lineup and 2 rented projectors that are provided for me. He gave me the rundown of what elements he wants and the rest is up to me. I looked at the videos of the party last year and I'm fairly confident I can at least match if not outdo their previous VJ. For the past week I've been creating loops and specific content to accompany the DJs like a mad man!
I'm mainly digging for some pearls of wisdom, words of advice and encouragement from fellow VJs.;)
What were some of the most important things you've learned from your first major gig? Networking tricks to get booked for future gigs, tips on making setup run smoothly, dealing with disasters, chaos, people and so on.

One of my clients suggested that I setup video through artnet/ethernet for a show. That way, he said, I could connect wireless to my projector. I have tried looking for artnet, but cant find any in-depth resources. Do you guys have any experience with artnet, and would it be realistic to use that with a matrox triplehead? Is that a stable solution and what should I eventually look out for?

A couple of clients have asked me to make content for a show. These are small club nights, and thr promoter doesnt have a great budget. Which is why they asked me, since they couldnt afford my fees. I was thinking making 30min off content. What is the average price for content? Can I sell the same content package to several clients, or is that considered unprofessional?
