We're nearly there. The new look is here and we've moved to the new server. Thanks Media Temple!
The only thing I'm waiting for is our new content delivery network (CDN) – you know, that thing that puts all of your content all over the world so that everyone experiences a quicker site load time – to start mirroring our content. That should be a couple of days. You shouldn't notice any negative impact in the meantime.
But until then…enjoy the new look!
P.S. – If you're interested in advertising, we've got a few new places on the site to put your ad! For more info, start on the advertising page.
UPDATE: (8:00 AM PT) - It looks like the CDN has taken a liking to the site. I hope that everything loads tons faster for everybody and looks like it should. If you see an anomalies, please don't hesitate to let me know on the contact form.

Greetings all. I'm sorry if you've noticed some downtime and other weirdness going on at the site over the last few days. I'm trying to work through all of it and give us an upgrade. Needless to say, I'm burnt out and frustrated with all of the crap that has been dealt to the site. I couldn't stand the lack of responses or completely inadequate responses that we did receive about issues that were out of our control.
Anyway, I'm combining a change of hosting server and much-anticipated new look into this horrendous process. You should be able to see some of the new look at this point but you probably can't see any of the photos included in articles. I'm hoping that worst case scenario for the ugliness is only through the end of Tuesday (April 24).
I'll try to keep everyone posted with what's going on when I can. I'll be visiting my with my doc tomorrow for my pre-surgery appointment. One week and counting…

Earlier this year, the light painters JanLeonardo Wöllert and Anton Julmy got together with Jochen Merker, and his newest creation. Merker has created a Real Time Light Painting program for both live performance and video production! On a basic level, this video is well worth a watch because it shows how many of the more intricate light painting photographs are created. However, when you get in to what the program is doing and its applications — the video is BEYOND FASCINATING! As Google Translate tells me, the program takes the light source, and traces its movements, colors, and intensity. It then processes the material, and adds the images collected together. The final result can either be recorded, or immediately outputted in real-time for live events. There was something about how the program can map the light paintings to objects, buildings, or stages, but Google Translate wasn't exactly clear–if you speak German, I would love to

At the beginning of March 2012, we had a few days' worth of pretty major solar activity — does anyone remember this? This storm produced some pretty incredible Auroras Borealis and Australis for days before and after the big CME from the Sun. CME means coronal mass ejection, which is a huge burst of solar wind that is powerful enough to push the bits of solar wind our direction. Solar wind is a big gust of protons and electrons with very, very strong electrical charges. Solar wind and coronal mass ejections are the things that the news and scientists talk about that might disrupt our power grids and kill our electronics. All of these phenomena are called space weather — which tickles me silly and makes me giggle: These massive bursts (CMEs) of charged particles plays hell on the Earth's magnetosphere, which is a protective magnetic field that basically wind

The above photo by Andrew Tallon was taken at 10:30 pm! What I love about this image is it perfectly exemplifies that our moon is just a reflector for sunlight. So why don't we see our night landscape this way, if a camera can capture it? A number of fascinating factors! Our moon's albedo (the measurement of amount of light reflected by astronomical objects) is 0.12, which means about 12% of light which hits the moon is reflected. This amount is subject to fluctuation by numerous factors, including the phase of the moon. The amount which hits the earth's surface can be–and frequently is–significantly less. To capture the above image, the shutter was open for 30 seconds. Our eyes have our own tricks for seeing in low-light scenarios, which involve our fantastic friends the rods and cones. The outer segment of rods contain the photosensitive chemical rhodopsin (you might know

Taking the same exact photograph each day would get boring, right? HELL NO, thanks to that most spectacular lighting designer–nature. Robert Weingarten did just that, and the results are something to marvel at. It is SO important to appreciate the root of all lighting design, our sun, and these photographs prove that that star's still got it! Each exposure would be made at precisely the same time of day – 6:30 am – measured by one quartz clock. All exposures would be made with the lens focused on infinity and at the same aperture of f/22. Just two variables were allowed into this disciplined scheme: the shutter speed of the lens, which would be adjusted faster or slower depending on the quantity and quality of light available at 6:30 a.m. each day; and, the most variable element of all, changes in the scene that were introduced by the forces of

Check this out: This video is here to demonstrate that the TSA's insistence that the nude body scanner program is effective and necessary is nothing but a fraud, just like their claims that the program is safe (radiation what?) and non-invasive (nude pictures who?). This video is not intended to teach anyone how to commit criminal acts, nor is intended to help "the terrorists" — if I could figure this out, I'm sure they've long figured it out, and by exposing it to the public, we now have an opportunity to correct it. The scanners are now effectively worthless, as anyone can beat them with virtually no effort. The TSA has been

Heyooooo! JimOnLight's UK correspondent here, coming at you with hot off the press news!
The conversation to dim streetlights during very low traffic levels has been initiated, and it's causing quite a stir! The Press Association reports:
" Norman Baker, the local transport minister, supported the move as long as safety was not compromised.
In a parliamentary written answer he said: "The level of light reduction will be based upon internationally agreed standards and made in consultation with the UK's Institute of Lighting Professionals.
"It is right that lighting authorities consider, in the interests of cost-saving and the environment, whether lighting can be sensibly dimmed or turned off, consistent with proper safety assessments." "
The roads in question are the A roads, the major thoroughfares connecting cities which are not motorways. The Californian side of me would describe A roads as "highways," while motorways are "freeways." Kapeesh?
So we like saving the environment, and we like saving money. Why is this such a massive discussion?
Numerous fears including increased crime, automobile accidents, are mixed with financial worries. The conversion would cost a significant sum, and people aren't sold on MAKIN IT RAIN!
The Telegraph reports:
"…While authorities across the UK are saving £21.5 million per year by turning off nine per cent of lights, the schemes to reduce street lighting cost a total of £106.3 million.
The bill for installing dimming technology or converting lights to part-night operations, which is five times greater than the saving, means some councils will not start seeing the benefits for up to eight years."
This follows other UK locations, such as the Welsh county of Gwynedd have already experimented in dimming street lights between midnight and 5:30 am. There seems to be much more support of dimming street lights than turning them off. Kirklees and Derbyshire are amongst numerous experiments in turning off street lights, both completely and in selection (1 in 10 seems to be a common cutting ratio). Fears of isolation ensued.
What do you think? Turn 'em all off and make everyone wear headlamps, selective black outs, dimming, ALL OF THE LIGHTS! @ FL or something else?
If you found this interesting, I also posted about the delightfully unexpected results of blue street lights in Glasgow as well as Japan here. I'm imagining these cobalt lamps as urban super heros, stopping crime and saving lives! Neato burrito.

Ok, so maybe not quite. However, this is still neat: The BMW Group has been developing laser headlights for vehicles. With intensity a thousand times, a fuel consumption at less than half even their current LEDs, and a size one hundred times smaller, the desire to develop this technology is quite self-explanatory. This opens up all sorts of new possibilities when integrating the light source into the vehicle. The BMW engineers have no plans to radically reduce the size of the headlights however, although that would be theoretically possible. Instead, the thinking is that the headlights would retain their conventional surface area dimensions and so continue to play an important role in the styling of a BMW, while the size advantages could be used to reduce the depth of the headlight unit, and so open up new possibilities for headlight positioning and body styling. The laser diodes used originally emit blue, but

In this time I determined that I was going to teach myself how to use chroma-key green screens, and I found a few clever videos that should make you either go "hmm!" or maybe just give you a belly laugh. This should be an excellent way to start your day! Household Hackers do a green screen: and THIS? This – is just awesome. Green screen tech in action: Rosco sells Chroma Key blue and green – check it out. FilmTools also sells Chroma Key stuff like tape and paint, and flooring. Yeah, I had no idea either. So you guys might remember when I did a guest spot at 20×2 in Austin, during the SXSW Interactive Conference a few years back. Here's my presentation for the 20×2 Festival to refresh your memory: 20×2 is a volunteer thing – an awesome thing – and it's a thing that is very jam-packed with very awesome and intelligent people. Mark Couvillion, one of the creators of 20×2, has reached out for some help this year. Mark needs someone to help him broadcast and record the 20×2 show happening at Skinny's this year, on March 9. This is on FRIDAY of this week. This year's question that the list of folk need to answer is: How Did I Get Here? Look – if you're going to be around the Austin area on Friday night, March 9, and you happen to have some gear that could make something like this possible, can

I saw an interesting article this weekend from CNN World's website. A company called Eight19 has created a pay-as-you-go solar technology called IndiGo that is being deployed right now in Kenya. Check this out, this is Simon Bransfield Garth, the CEO of Eight19. I knew I would like this company as soon as I realized what "Eight19" meant – it's the time that a ray of light from the sun reaches Earth. Here's Simon: Here now is a quick video of a man named Samuel talking about the benefits of his Pay-As-You-Go Solar installation: This is some pretty cool stuff. The solar technology that Eight19 prides themselves on is a low-manufacturing-cost solar cell printed on a plastic film. The reason that they can have products that are so low cost is that the printing method benefits from being able to use the high-speed roll printing technology that exists in the

Curious Displays from Julia Tsao on Vimeo.
Julia Tsao's Curious Displays are just plain neat! The proposal for a display that goes beyond set dimensions and aspect ratio is in itself fascinating, but then the augmented reality functionality shown in section 2 shows a whole new level of possibility. I would just LOVE to get my hands dirty programming some art on these little buggers!

I have mixed feelings about this subject, but it's important to spread the news about what's going down and how it's gonna go down with respect to this incandescent phase-out happening in our time. Sylvania has an awesome guide to this phase-out, showing the whats and the whens of this thing. Check it out here. Also, Sylvania's website has a link to some of the political and law items of this phase-out. It's worth a look. Click on the image, it opens up full-size. Also, check out the PDF from whence it came. Lemme just ask you this: knowing what we know about how the government is handling things right now, do we really want them messing in what we use to see? Well, I'm in Canada! I finally got my visa, as you might have read earlier this week. I'm working my ass off up here, we have lots in the pan right now. I'm also writing and working on the first JimOnLight TV episode, and let me tell you – I am not a video editor by trade. It is some hard shit that takes tons of time! Ask Jeff Waful! Hahaa as far as my romantic life? I think there is a good saying for that: "It is only once that you've hit rock bottom that you bounce." I think I should go out more. HEY HEY! I have been using this free online tool for so long I feel it is my duty to share it with the rest of the web. Check this out – this is Andrew Hedges' Aspect Ratio Calculator: I use this aspect ratio calculator to resize images and video that I post on JimOnLight.com. it is awesome. Thanks Andrew for making such a f*cking awesome and useful free tool! No, I didn't get paid to post this, nor would I have taken the money to do so. This is just an awesome tool that always stays open on my Chrome browser. All 172 tabs of its Chrome glory. I found the information below on Wikipedia – a visual list of commonly used aspect ratios and their applications. Nerdy? YES! I'm JimOnLight! What do you expect??

My dad would love this. HEY DAD! CHECK THIS OUT! Also, this: This is from a company called bitplay, INC from Japan. About the lamp: BANG! is a desk lamp with a gun-shaped remote controller. User can fire the “gun” to turn the light off. The light goes out and the lampshade knocks to the side, showing that it’s been hit. To turn it back on, simply shot it again, and the lampshade will raise up slowly and turn the light back on at the same time. So obviously you know now that it's called BANG! - I'm guessing. W00T! <hands raised in the air quite in the same fashion as if I didn't care> So this is some pretty awesome news I want to share! I am not really a press release guy, but this is MY press release! Sorry I've had to be so secretive about this news, there was some Immigration stuff that had to happen first before it could all be released! I've taking over the Product Manager gig at CAST Software in Toronto, Canada for wysiwyg and Vivien Virtual Event Designer! I'm moving up here to Canada for a while, but still doing the tradeshow route and traveling the globe talking about light and the world of lighting! Here's the release, sent earlier today: TORONTO – CAST Software of Toronto announces the promotion of Jim Hutchison, creator and editor of the internationally renowned JimOnLight.com, stepping up to assume the role of Product Manager for

A few months ago, I received an email from a reader about explaining the phenomenon of Amber Drift. I was feeling froggy, so I figured I'd make an infographic to attempt to give a simple explanation to this phenomenon. Happy FRIDAY! If you click on the image, it'll open up in its original large size – so check it out! Related posts: How Big is GE? [Infographic] How Fireworks Happen – A Great Infographic! Alright, so Fox posted about this yesterday, but I had to know more. I mean, this is Rick Hutton crazy laser sh*t here! Remember this? Alright, now check THIS out! That, my friends, is Yvette Mattern's installation, Global Rainbow, that is on display in the night time sky until March 4 in the UK. Yvette took seven parallel laser beams, one of each color of our pal Roy (G. Biv of course), and blasted them across the sky. The images are stunning. You must see this exhibition, because it is freaking outstanding. Check out some pics, courtesy of the BBC. Also, check out a bunch more pics at Yvette's Flickr, and then take a moment and read Yvette's blog! She's all over the web! Just like the remainder of this story, this isn't going to end well. So, the legal people for the band Sugarland have made some pretty sensational comments regarding claims made by the some of the people injured or killed in the collapse that took place at the Indiana State Fair during the summer of 2011. I doubt you've forgotten any of it, I can't believe that I'll ever forget that image of the stage crashing down: From a post at the MSNBC site: Fans who were killed and injured when stage rigging and sound equipment collapsed onto them as they awaited a Sugarland concert at the Indiana State Fair failed to take steps to ensure their own safety and are at least in part to blame for their injuries, the country duo's attorneys said. The statement, part of a Feb. 16 response to a civil suit filed by survivors and

AWWWWWWW YEAH BOYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE You know, sometimes I crack myself up. No, actually, I crack myself up all the time. If you've ever hung out with me, you know that I am prone to these outbursts of laughter pretty much constantly because I think the world is awesome and hilarious often, so you can imagine what my neighbors must think of the guy who works in his apartment all day long just cackling to himself all day. Oh, yeah, I also speak with my cat. She does speak conversational English, or maybe I speak conversational Meow, I'm not really sure. I think I need to get out more. Which, coincidentally, allows me to SEGUE INTO THE WHOLE REASON FOR WRITING THIS POST! HA HAAAA! Who's coming to THE FOCUS?! [haha that's not really what it's called, but for the time being it's called that in my noodle, so imagine it being
