Sarah and Matt DePriest from Elmbrook Church in Brookfield, WI bring us these jagged Christmas trees.
They started by making Christmas trees from foam core painted dark green and blue. Then they screwed wooden frames to the foam at varying heights to create a natural forest look. They did the same thing for the snowflakes in the front. They created the small snowflakes throughout the stage using wooden poles with worklights clamped to them (attached to a dimming system). They clipped foam snowflakes in front of the light.
Alec Glynn and Elliot Lund lit the whole set from front and back with Chauvet Color Dash Quads.

The question remains, however, about why there is a nearly $700 weekly gap between starting wages for Los Angeles and New York artists working on the same show. New York has the highest cost of living in the United States (Los Angeles, by comparison, is ranked ninth), yet the studio’s starting salary for workers in New York is only $20,800. That figure ranks below New York’s average starting wages for unskilled laborers like doormen ($25,680) and sanitation workers ($27,842).

While following on the coat tail of my first popular video "Queen Bohemian Rhapsody Old School Computer Remix" i tried to change the venue and built a couple of robot bands (yeah! machines that play actual instruments). These videos didn't fair as well so i decided to go back to the basics and create another video utilizing old computer equipment. For this video i recorded each instrument separately with a decent stereo mic and i also used a mixer to adjust the audio levels. i would like to point out that absolutely no sampling or audio effects were used.

i was very pleased how the hard-drive drums turned out and they sound great. i will definitely use them in my next video. Oh Yeah, my next video i would like to use a current song so please leave any recommendations.

i would like to give a shoutout to James Houston who (i think) was the first person to use multiple legacy computer equipment in conjunction to make a song. Be sure to take the time to view his YouTube video "Big ideas: Don't get any - Radiohead cover by James Houston".
For all the haters out there:
1. The timing is not off, take the time to listen to the actual song before criticizing.
2. No, i don't have a lot of spare time so i have to use it sparingly.
3. Fair use on the internet. Not making any money here! i wasn't even born when this song came out but this is just one way of reviving an older song and introducing it to Generation Z.

Eric Bradley from Life Center Church in Spokane, WA brings us this epic wall of dots and lights.
The team was inspired by the Hillsong Chapel DVD as well as a set they saw (don’t tell anyone!) on Glee.
They welded together 3 sections of steel tubing (2 20′x20′ 1 12′x20′) with cross bracing and then welded all-thread in 2″ 4″ 6″ and 8″ increments to create their grid. Off the grid they hung OSB drilled with 2″ 3″ and random hole sizes in 2′ increments. They sanded and stained the OSB.
Then they backed the OSB with Coroplast. Mixed in with the OSB panels they put 23 2′x’2 light boxes made from OSB and loaded with 16 65W flood lights. Each light box was circuited individually which allowed them to do some cool chases. The entire wall was back lit with 16 ETC Seledor Vivid R’s.
The light bulbs you see in some of the pictures were an extra element they added for their Christmas Eve services.

Audiovisual design studio No-Domain put together this refreshing video piece titled Lullaby Crocodile.
For the exhibition at the Royal Castle in Warsaw, Poland, Novinastudio created this animation to tell the story of the famed castle: The Royal Castle – from Destruction to Reconstruction.
Until recently this effect has been created in-camera using specialized lenses. In this tutorial, Richard Bird gives an overview of how the “Tilt-Shift Effect” can be quickly recreated in post-production without the use of 3rd party plug-ins by remapping the depth of field, use of simple color correction and altering the frame rate.

Herb Lubalin demystifies the process and opens up about the creation of his famed PBS logo.
Straight from the AT&T vault, Saul Bass’s 26 Minute pitch video to AT&T, introducing the new look: the largest corporate identity design in American history, at the time.
Neville Lauridsen from Salvation Army in Palmerston North, New Zealand brings us this design that reminds me of the rubber band ball in my office.
They started by using LED fairy lights to form the shape of Christmas trees on the sides. Because the trees were see-through…sight lines weren’t affected by them. They made the starts out of cardboard painted silver with added glitter.
They made the balls with plastic flute board. They cut it into strips and use rivets with washers to assemble. Inspired by Spheres and Trees.
Then they rented star cloth a star cloth.

Hello everyone! In this tutorial we’re gonna show you how you can create 3 awesome circle animations with a few simple steps and default plug-ins such as CC Circle and Radio Waves.
Step 1Create a new composition clicking by Menu->Composition->New Composition. Name it “Circles”, change the resolution to 200×200 and set the duration to 7 seconds.
Step 2
We don’t need a background solid so we can skip that part and click on the Toggle Transparency Grid button.
Step 3
Create a new solid clicking by Menu->Layer->New->Solid. The color is doesn’t matter. Change the resolution to 200×200 and name it “Circle”.
Step 4
With the “Circle” solid layer selected, go to Effect->Generate->Circle. Under the effect properties we have to set the color to #302B2F and click on the Radius stopwatch to add a new keyframe. Move forward 2 seconds and change the Radius property to 93.
Step 5
Let’s duplicate the “Circle” solid layers, offset them and change the circle effect colors on each layer.
Step 6
Let’s duplicate the top “Circle” layer once again. Offset it and right click on it and go to Time-Reverse Layer or you can use the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+alt+R). Now we have a looped circle animation. We can use this animation in Trapcode Particular as a custom particle for example, but because in this tutorial we’re dealing with default plug-ins, I will use Foam.
Step 7
Create a new composition clicking by Menu->Composition->New Composition. Name it “Abstract circles”, change the resolution to 1280×720 and set the duration to 7 seconds.
Step 8
Create a new solid clicking by Menu->Layer->New->Solid. The color is doesn’t matter. Change the resolution to 1280×720 and name it “BG”.
Step 9
With the “BG” layer selected, let’s go to Effect->Generate->Ramp. Change the Start Color to #9BB58F and the End color to #FFA601 and set the Ramp shape to Radial Ramp.
Step 10
Create a new solid clicking by Menu->Layer->New->Solid. The color is doesn’t matter. Change the resolution to 1280×720 and name it “Foam”.
Step 11
With the “Foam” layer selected go to Effect->Simulation->Foam. Before we move, on let’s drop the “Circles” composition inside of this composition and turn it off. In “Foam” I didn’t change too much. I changed the Bubble Texture Layer to the “Circles” composition and changed the view option to rendered and that’s it.
Step 12
Finaly I just add this crunched paper image and changed it to multiply. It’s an optional step but it just gives a little more depth to the animation.
Step 13
Now you should see something similar to this… Let’s go to the 2nd animation : ).
Step 14
Create a new composition clicking by Menu->Composition->New Composition. Name it “Radio waves fun”, change the resolution to 1280×720 and set the duration to 10 seconds.
Step 15
Create a new solid clicking by Menu->Layer->New->Solid. The color is doesn’t matter. Change the resolution to 1280×720 and name it “BG”.
Step 16
Create a new solid clicking by Menu->Layer->New->Solid. The color is doesn’t matter. Change the resolution to 1280×720 and name it “Radio waves”.
Step 17
Go to Effect->Generate->Radio Waves and set the following properties. I used #FA0047 as the stroke color.
Step 18
Go to Effect->Time->Echo and set the following properties.
Step 19
Here’s what you should see now…. Now, let’s finish the 3rd and final animation.
Step 20
Create a new composition clicking by Menu->Composition->New Composition. Name it “Circle text Animation”, change the resolution to 1280×720 and set the duration to 12 seconds.
Step 21
The method is almost exactly the same as what we did before. The only difference is that now we have to choose different solid layer colors.
Step 22
With the “Circle 1″ solid layer selected go to Effect->Generate-> Circle and apply it. We need to animate the radius just like we did before, but in this case I need to change the Blending mode to Stencil Alpha.
Step 23
Let’s duplicate the Green solid layer couple times, change the colors on every duplicated layer and offset them.
Step 24
Finally, I just put a text layer on top of all the duplicated layers.
Step 25
Let’s select the Ellipse Tool to create a circular mask on the text. Hold down Ctrl+Alt+Shift while dragging to create a perfect circle mask.
Step 26
Let’s change the mask to Add mode and we’ll need to animate the Mask Path as well.
Step 27
I am just trying to create a simple growing circular mask path animation as you can see here. You can add the previous paper texture to the top and change the blending mode to Multiply to create a more dramatic or realistic look and here’s an another trick that I used..
Step 28
We can add a simple point light and then turn the 3D layer option on for all of the duplicated solid layers.

For many of the guys that work here, the restaurant is like a second home - some of them have been slinging burgers, making shakes, and waiting on customers at this location for decades. Opened in 1938, the place hasn't been altered since the early '60s, and it looks all the better for it.

Brandy Gibson from Chestnut Ridge Church in Morgantown, WV brings us this thicker version of String Theory.
They started by suspending 20 feet of 1″x1″ square aluminum tubing from their movable battens. Then they attached landscape marking tape 6″ apart using gaffers tape. Then they added some paper lanterns and lit it all up. Total budget: under $100.

Filmmaker Danny Cooke has documented the dying art of letterpress in a short film titled Upside Down, Left to Right: A Letterpress Film.
This is a brief introduction to some of the most unbelievable Visual Effects in Hollywood’s biggest movies. This “Part 2” will describe the making of movies: King Kong, Harry Potter, X-Men First Class and Pirates of the Caribbean.
For this movie, the VFX team of Weta Digital had to improve their working system with regards to hardware, networking and infrastructure. Now, they have a big philosophical change in their pipeline: so they are more geared toward pulling information together at render time rather than carrying it through individual scenes. This means that technical directors now use low resolution proxies rather than high detailed geometry whether they’re looking for complex scenes or complex characters..

Development of new toolsThe team had to create new tools that could satisfy their needs, so they created a new fur simulation software and new fur shaders to animate Kong’s five million hairs when he moves, ruffle his hair on the plane’s wing, manage the collision with other objects and allow it to become dirty. The crew also wrote a fluid dynamic’s solver, which they use to create the ocean for Kong’s voyage to New York.

Creating KongOf course, one of the biggest challenges in the film was the creation of its star. The modelers created him and the doubles which he interacts with in Maya with the help of Mudbox. To breathe life into Kong, rather than rely solely on keyframe animation for the CG gorilla, the crew motion captured the actor who gave life to Gollum in The Lord of the Rings, Andy Serkis. New software made it possible for animators to drive the CG gorilla with either the mocap data or key frame animation, and a new system interpreted Serkis’s facial expressions before mapping data onto the 3D model.
The software looks at the dots on Andy’s face, figures out what his expression says that he’s sad, for example and then applies that to Kong. – Joe Letteri

Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows (2010) VFX Team Development of the Visual Effects CG Set DesignFor many of the scenes in these movies, partial sets and then digital sets were created. This film wanted to show more destruction shots and extensive battle sequences so they decided not to use any more miniatures because with CG Imagery they were able to create more rigid body dynamics and destruction work. The castle in the earlier movies was actually a miniature and so they had rebuilt the entire castle and were able to handle new concepts and ideas. They also rebuilt the set for Godric’s Hallow in CG and almost the entire scene is full of CG environments and CG snow.
For this scene the actors were shot on the set acting out the transformation, sometimes adjusting their height to be the same as Harry. A second set of plates involved Harry acting out every character and he had to dress like all of the other actors. All of these actors except for Harry were shot only for their facial performance. To capture the facial expressions volumetrically they used The Mova Countour Capture rig that is designed to hold 28 cameras around the actors. A phosphorescent make-up was applied to the actors which was then picked up by a series of cameras and produced a tracked surface and mesh. The data was then processed at MPC in conjunction with a facial rig built for each actor and finally, it was animated building skulls inside the heads to keep the facial mechanics of each character as realistic as possible.

Flight AttackThe flight attack takes place in a phrenetic sequence flying over London to escape the Death Eaters. MPC created GG thestrals “a winged horse with a skeletal body”, extended Privet Drive’s set and combined the green screen riders with the CG thestrals and digital doubles. To create the clouds, they used Maya Fluids and then joined the far and near clouds, using different techniques to render it. The spells were created to look like a lightning inside the cloud and also used were some lens flares. The duel between Voldemort and Harry when their wands get connected and then Voldemort’s wand broke up was created using full CG Smoke and using both a digital double and the real actor.

X-Men First Class (2011) VFX Team Development of the Visual Effects Making of the Mutants EffectsThe VFX team designed the way mutants exhibited their powers as if there were no film history to deal with. They began with a range of ideas for each mutant and started considering how they related to the mutants in previous films, both visually and in the X-Men comic world. Where there was a character that had already been seen before like Mystique, they tried to relate the effects to earlier visuals. Where there was a family tie in comic book genealogy they tried to relate their characters power to a family similarity, such as the fact that Havok is Cyclop’s brother. In some cases the team didn’t use any real visual reference so they simply chose the visual that they liked the best.

Creating the Diamond BodyThe team started by creating simple still illustrations of how Emma Frost’s diamond body would look. The character went through multiple reviews until the team found a look that worked. They then translated those still images into an animation. To get the movement as precise as possible they rotoscoped, frame by frame, the actress’s performance. Finally, VFX artists digitally removed her from the frame and put the animated one in her place. To really look like a diamond, Frost needed to sparkle, so they had a lot of work to make sure she refracted and reflected light correctly. They finally managed to get the right look by taking pictures of a faceted cubic zirconium and using them as a reference.
She had to be both crystal and fluid, because she had to move when she was in her diamond form – John Dykstra

Making of AzazelAzazel is a devilish-looking mutant who is able to transport between dimensions. For its making, the VFX team began with the development of the digital fire and smoke simulation that appears when he teleports. They roto-mated Azazel, so whatever movement he was doing at the time would then in turn affect the smoke simulation. Then, they also had to create the tail, which was built and animated in CG and some transparency and textures were added in for a real-world feel.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s Ends (2007) VFX Team Development of the Visual Effects Creating Davy Jones and his CrewDavy Jones and seventeen of his transmogrified crew were digital creations that had to match seamlessly with the real actors. The team used ZBrush for the creation of the 3D models for the characters. For the animation the team used motion capture but not in traditional methods; instead of recording performances in a mo-cap studio and then inserting the CGI character into a blank space on the plates post-production, they decided to shoot the actors and record their movement on the same plate, and then replace them digitally with the CGI character. The team used Pixar’s RenderMan for the renders, but they were taking so long that they decided to discuss with Pixar how to implement a new technique inside their software. This way, renders that were taking twelve or thirteen hours went down by to just three or four hours and they started to produce the same or even better results in a quarter of the time.

Creating a MaelstromTo create this scene, ILM hired Frank Lossaso-Petterson who helped to build the Stanford’s fluid simulation engine, which is an hybrid of a PhysBAM engine and a Zeno interface. It’s something like Maya except that it is more customizable. To create the Maelstrom the team used a technique which consists in simulating it as though it were flat and gravity pointing inward instead of sloping down, and then transforming the surface into the whirlpool shape. This scene required a lot of computational fluid dynamic, huge resolutions and computational power and memory.

Environments and CompositingThis movie has more than 1000 VFX shots including waterfall sequences, icebergs, ship destruction, CG Creatures, and so on. Many of these shots have live action elements combined with CGI, except for the Maelstrom whirlpool which is a total 3D Environment. The ships were live action boats extended and sometimes full CG Ships so they had both live water action and CG water simulations. There is a scene where the ship is descending below the water; for this scene water passes were filmed and tracked and then were combined with CGI elements and the motion captured crew.
My goal is to always start from some live action so we got a grounded reality that we can build from- John Knoll

Happycamper spent the fall of 2011 working alongside China Mobile to create an ambitious mixed-media piece in Wireless City. Using a combination of traditional model-making techniques and 3D technology, the spot bridges the gap between traditional and digital mediums. With a meticulous craftsmanship, the audience remains oblivious to the integration of contrasting techniques, and the difference between what is physical and inanimate becomes indistinguishable. The result is seamless. Working from sketches, maquette models, and architectural blue-prints, Happycamper enlisted the help of Vaidas Bagonas for character design, Milford for final models and Codsteaks for the creation of small props and set building.

I was introduced to “The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore” iPad app by my friend’s five-year-old son while traveling the North Island of New Zealand at the end of last year.
I remember being amazed by the quality and detail that went into this interactive narrative experience. Created by Moontbot Studios and directed by William Joyce and Brandon Oldenburg, the app is an adaptation of the award-winning short-film of the same name that, as of last week, has been nominated for an Oscar.
Inspired in equal measures by Hurricane Katrina, Buster Keaton, The Wizard of Oz and a love for books, “Morris Lessmore” is a story about a man’s love for books. After a huge storm that takes everything from him, the protagonist finds himself in a magical place where books are alive and become his friends. The rest is a journey worth watching. Enjoy.

Elizabeth Withers from Lifepoint Church in Fredericksburg, Virginia brings us this organic, woody design.
They created the trees by making a chicken-wire frame and covering it with paper maché. They got a thick mix of glue for the paper maché by using flour, Elmers glue-all, and water mixed together until it was about the consistency of brownie batter.
They created the bases of the trees from old newel posts on top of a piece of scrap board with a screw driven up through the botton. They’re a portable church so they have to break everything down week to week. With this, they could just pop the trees on and off the bases.
The trees and bases costs them just over $100.
They also had a scrim backdrop that worked nicely in between the trees. That cost them about $750.

In this tutorial we will be making a network tv style Venetian Blinds Transition Effect. This tutorial includes several expressions used to automate the movement of layers, control dozens of adjustment layers, and control rotation from a gradient layer!
Part 1 explains the concept and builds the bulk of the shapes used to create the effect. We also start to get into using gradients to control the layers. Part 2 finishes the gradient control layers and begins fine tuning the look with motion. Part 3 finishes the tutorial with lights, adjustment layers, expressions, camera animation, and final tweaks.
Once you build the out the project, you can use it for anything just by modifying a few layers. Check it out!

In lieu of computer-generated images, Legs runs with a look that’s more crass than polish and employs many hallmark devices of a prototypical girl drama.

Story:
As morning dawns on a Norwegian suburb, a detachment of killer-slugs, led by the notorious Sergeant Slug, prepare for a heads-on attack on a small garden – their objective? A juicy, delicious flower on the other end, deep within a flowerbed.
A new conscript and his close friend, a medical officer, both suit and join in the massive charge into the garden. But as the slugs emerge into the exposed field, they stand head to head with a diligent, elderly lady, hell-bent on keeping her garden pristine and safe from pests.
As the two sides clash, it is as the saying goes: All's fair in hunger and war!

Garrett Walker from Bayside Community Church in Bradenton, FL takes We’ll Have a Ball one step further with this treatment.
Garrett cut the letters out of MDF and covered the front surface with AC ducting/aluminum tape. He bought 4″ diamond plate tape rolls. The tape really helped reflect the lights off the letters.
He used ordinary lighting sockets and 14 gauge wiring to wire it all together. Garrett got the normal, 60W lightbulbs that you can find anywhere.
He used paint thinner on a rag to quickly wash the wattage print off–to give the bulbs a cleaner look. Then he used a separate dimming circuit for every letter so he could light each up independently from the other.

Caleb Delamont from Saanich Baptist Church in Victoria, BC, Canada brings us this design inspired by Frosty Forestry.
They started by hanging 18 hanging lightbulbs from string behind the screens. They ran power to them from a dimmer pack so they could dim them at the lighting board. Those cost about $300 from partylights.com.
Caleb wanted to frame the stage with some simple lights and found some pre-lit LED trees at Walmart ($30 each). The light bulbs around the trees were also from partylights.com and they had those from a previous set design.
The trees were the easiest part. A landscaper happened to have exactly what they needed and dropped them off at the church. They dried them in the basement for 3 weeks and then spray painted them a flat white. They had some 1″x4″ already and some stands that just screwed the 1″x4″ to to make a sort of support fence for the trees. Then Caleb cut them to around 7′ tall and spaced them about 1′ apart on the fence, fastening them with suspension strap (hardware store for $10).
They lit them with 4 Elation TriPar LED lights on the ground shooting across the backdrop.

Hush Studios delivers again with a beautiful piece for Marsh. A gorgeously minimal design paired with great animation make this a real treat.
Director Jodi Terwilliger had this to say about about the creative process:
The client initially asked us for a visual exploration of what IGNITE meant (an acronym for their internal leadership goals). We ended up turning it into an epic story based, surprisingly enough, on the Odyssey.
Visually, it started out much more flat and graphic. I wanted to keep it simple so we could execute above and beyond. What I discovered was that Salih and Justin were banging out amazing test animations almost immediately, which empowered me to start giving the design and the character a lot more depth. It’s really a testament to their skill and their dedication to the project.
Salih and Justin are two of my favorite animators in New York, and they did their usual fantastic work here. I’m looking forward to seeing what’s next in 2012 from Hush.

Paul Fowler from New Minas Baptist Church in New Minas, Nova Scotia, Canada brings us this open box of Christmas goodness.
Their Big Idea Team came up with a design combining artificial trees, birch frees (picked up from along the highway), cotton batten, and lots of clear mini-lights.
For the back drop they used black broadcloth to frame the sides and top and muslin that covers the back wall. The swag curtains were just a thinner grade of muslin.
The lighting consisted of Par64 par cans, Microh LED pro64′s and 2 Microh LED Bar II fixtures.
Total cost: approximately $400.
This is a demonstration video showcasing my interactive still life project. It involves a motion-senstive frame that feeds realtime tilt data to a 3D scene.

Timelapse video featuring the two iconic towers of Dubai. The Burj Al Arab and the world's tallest building. The Burj Khalifa.
Commisioned to shoot various timelapses of the Emirate by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai. This is an edit I put together for myself of some of my favourite shots. Including some amazing views from 154 floors up on the Burj Khalifa.

Mike from Word Of Grace Community Church in Sheboygan Falls, WI brings us this two color stage design.
Inspired by his three year old son, Mike decided to construct this design on a larger scale. His son brought home some crafty art project they were creating in their Sunday morning childrens service.
Mike constructed the cross from half inch plywood framed by 1×4′s with compound miter cuts to create depth. He created the outer panels with simple bed sheets bought from Walmart framed with 1×4′s. Simple, white and blue.
After we were initially sent Henrique Barone’s stellar short, This Idea Is Not Working, our jaws hit floor. We immediately wanted to share it with our Motionographer readers, so got the engine warmed up and put things in motion. Then, something happened: we found out it’s a student piece. Jeepers! We scratched our head and weighed the options. Of course, we do have our Students section and although you can find it there, we were so impressed by Barone’s animation skills that we had no choice but to give it some love in our Main section. One thing we never want Motionographer to become is a place where only big-studios reign supreme and the little guy (you, me, us, etc) has no shot to shine. And not to gush, but it’s rare to find animation so inventive, polished and well-timed—let alone, a student piece. Did we mention that it’s hand-drawn?

The two of us traveled together all over the world during 2011, and filmed as much as our schedules allowed. Locations included in the video include Detroit, Warsaw, Oslo, NYC, Vancouver, London, Paris, Prague, New Orleans, Auckland, Sydney, Denver and many more.
We used 2 canon 7Ds and about 6 different lenses and edited it all in FCP X.
